With MLG NY around the corner (this Saturday), and their announcement that the events will be shown on USA Network around November (click for article), what are your opinions on competitive gaming? Does it have a future? Is it a waste of time?

It seems quite logical that they started this initiative cause major gaming tournaments have attracted a lot of attention from all around the world and since there was a tournament form it's only natural that there's a league form within a sport, it's (nearly) allways like that.

Personally I find it fun to watch good gamers in shooters/racers. I saw a documentary on gaming tournaments the other day and was overwhelmed by the amount of sponsership they got. So it's going to attract loads of gamers cause of the prize money which won't make it hard to set up.

But I know I don't have the will to commit myself to one game (or gametype) for to long a time. Basicly I think it is going to be a big wave of publicity and will settle and fade away.

I'd probably see it as a future if I did it myself, but I don't. I'm good at Halo, but there are some people who just don't do anything else.... I got college classes AND high school classes, you know? And a job, too.

It seems like fun, though. I like to watch them go head-to-head on G4.

I think that as long as there is a wide range of games on offer, it should be successful. Unfortunately, it's pretty rare to see anything like that over here.

Well, the first MLG came and went.

If I'm correct, I got a Semi-Pro rank for SSBM doubles with an upset vs Philly and Comp. . .

But it won't be on TV :P.

The way it looks, it definately looks like Halo 2 will steal the show. Halo had 32 stations to SSBM's 12, and no serious SSBM matches were played on the main station, two giant projection screens that you could see everywhere in the room where the competion was held.

EDIT: They have the brackets up for the Pro doubles competion here. My team name is F WoW (my partner doesn't like WoW), and all our tournament movement was in the loser's bracket. -_-

I think it's kind of sad how someone gets so good at just ONE game because that's all they play. I mean.. Play something else..

Well (and its not like i play only one game) if people really enjoy one type of game then i dont think anything is sad about that.

I think the vid game "sport" shall get bigger and bigger.
