Can PNGs be transparent? Whenever I try to save a transparent PNG, my drawing program gives me some message about a merged image, and when I upload them, the background is white. Grr...
If not, what's the highest quality filetype that can be transparent?

I'm not too sure, but I think GIF and PNG can be transparent. The others usually leave a white background.

Alright, but do GIFs preserve images perfectly? Or do they have limited colours, or noise?

GIFs have really crappy image quality, but can do transparency. PNG actually does better transparency AND image quality. Are you using an older program? Because transparent PNGs were (iirc) invented much later than the PNG format itself was.

The program I'm using is copyrighted 1991-2000, so I guess it was made in 2000.

I just stick with transparent GIFs, since I can't tell the difference in quality, and I'm too lazy to figure out transparent PNGs. I don't think that the difference is noticable.
