Why do people come up with such stupid things that actaully serve little to no purpose?

Things so far I have pondered the actual function of

Chihuahuas, the dog. What is the point in these quivering wrecks? They are more of a decoration than a pet. Useless

Surds, the mathematical term. Never in my education have I come across a more pointless topic. Why we need to know if a number is irrational or not is beyond me. Why do we need this in later life? So we can discuss the actual use of surds. Useless

Anything incredibly pointless you know of?

Having Logics as a school subject. Why do people have to ponder everything and make a science out of everything? Talking about why people think logically is completely useless if you ask me. And I have to learn this crap!

Wait till A Level Maths; you'll do everything in surds then. In fact, its not so much the issue of whether they're irrational or rational, its the rules that go with them that you use. Such as: Square root A x Square root B = Square root AB.

I agree on the subject of shot glasses though, especially Shot glass chess sets. First of all, why use shot glasses in the first place? Why not use a normal glass and half fill it? As for shot glass chess sets, why not buy a cheaper, normal chess set and 2 glasses?

Replying to the surds point (For some reason I didnt read it before), on the contrary surds is one of the most important concept in maths. If you remove a number from it's surd from, most likely it wouldn't express it's true value. Much like changing a fraction to a decimal and rounding it off. So to be very precise (ie have the EXACT value of a number), the surd form must be used.

^ Even though I'm not sure if we've learned surds yet (might have a different term for it here in the states), I agree with that.

Now the one thing I find pointless are shrinks, aka therapists, aka psychiratists, aka any other name there might be for their pointlessness. They don't know what they're talking about EVER, they never help anyone, and all they do when they're not acting like they know what they're talking about is say "Yeah, mhm, how does that make you feel?"

Because shotting something makes you drunk faster, it's like having a whole can of mixed drink in one mouthful. Plus it's fun to do it with friends in a circle, counting down and whatnot.

Studying can help to find a job that pays you well in order to "life as we see fit and in the fullest". Money makes the world go around, and work gives you money, so you can live a life of 'happiness'. Extensive studying I find is pointless, but there is always options to drop out of school and follow other pursuits. That's the way the world works, don't agree? Kill yourself now, no one is forcing you to endure life if you think it's pointless.

I agree with you, Agatio. But I wouldn't want to kill myself, since I personally love my life. I was just saying what I think I think about it, overall. Life, as a whole(not MY life), is full of misery and sadness. Everyone says that it is the greatest gift one can get, but I think that varies greatly. For someone life is something they would never change, but for somebody else it is nothing but a curse. THAT'S why I say life is pointless, though not useless.

I agree 100%. I'm fairly nihilistic in my philosophical view on life, but at the same time I'm realistic and think we should make the most of what very little time we get.

Movies are pretty much short stories. Unless there are sequels, you gotta cram everything into about two to three hours. Look what happens to Harry Potter, trying to cram a novel into a movie. So a short story would technically be a movie script.

Yeah, but if a picture tells more than 1000 words... Then how many words would a whole movie tell? Sure it's not as easy as that, but I wouldn't say that movies have less detail than books. In alot of movies, the small details are still there... but the watcher should have eye for it. ;)

If you count a frame as a picture, and assuming a frame rate of 60 fps and a movie length of 90 minutes, that's *pulls out calculator* 324 million words from the pictures alone. And then you need to add in the script. Any questions? ;)

Alex: The point of short stories is that sometimes, you just don't want to read an entire novel. And sometimes, there's not enough story for a novel.

If you count a frame as a picture, and assuming a frame rate of 60 fps and a movie length of 90 minutes, that's *pulls out calculator* 324 million words from the pictures alone. And then you need to add in the script. Any questions? :(

That being said, a movie tells just as much about the story as the book. Sure, a movie like Harry Potter hardly gives any "memory flashbacks" or whatever you call them in books, but some movies add alot of detail into the story.

I agree 100%. I'm fairly nihilistic in my philosophical view on life, but at the same time I'm realistic and think we should make the most of what very little time we get.

But it's all for nothing, isn't it? When you die, in the unfortunate case that there is no afterlife, you simply forget all of your experiences, and your entire life no longer matters. Sure, you may benefit future generations, but they'll come and go over time as well, until the eventual stage that the sun expands, the point at which humans will probably be on Omega 41 or something.
