I'm sure we all have items that have screens... and over time, these screens (whether it's for a handheld game system, a cell phone, your mp3, etc.) get scratches and marked up and all that.

So, any tips or suggestions on how to remove them?

I was wondering the same thing. I've had my cell phone now for about 6 months now, and the screen is already covered in scratches and for the money that I threw out for it, I need to fix that problem. I thought that the only way is to buy a new screen and replace it myself.

I'm open to try anything at this point.

You can probably buy some sprays on the market which claim to remove scrathes. In my opinion, the best tried and tested method is to get the softest cloth you can find (like the ones you clean glasses with) and go over it for a few minutes while breathing on it.

I once saw a machine in a games shop which would allow people to get rid of scratches on game disks. I never got to see it being used though.

For electric guitars, I've seen people use that car spray stuff on it then getting a smooth cloth and rubbing it.

I don't think you'd want to use this method for electronics, however. :silence:

Thats just cleaning it. It won't remove acutal scratches/gouges in the screen.

Have a look at this GL:

I read up on this stuff yesterday, and found out that the best (and cheapest) solutions are using Brasso. (The stuff in Wiffle's post), and Toothpaste.

I'm gonna test the toothpaste one on my old phone and see if that ends up working. :silence:

Since I'm too cheap for screen protectors, I just cover the screens of all my gadgets in clear packing tape and cut it to fit with an exacto knife. The toughest part is avoiding bubbles, but its a cheap preventative measure that lasts a surprisingly long time. As for repairing the scratches you've got, you're on your own.

Well if it's CDs you want to get scratches off, boil some water and lay the CD in the boiling water until it goes cold. The water should melt off the thin layer on top, which is where the scratches are widest and therefor most harmful.

I assume that GL still wants to be able to use the gadget/cd after removing the scratches Caael.

Yeah that method is extremely risky. That layer is there to prevent the metal writing layer from oxidizing, so if you do this, copy the CD quickly, before the original rusts and flies apart.

Hey, the only time it didn't work was on the old Tomb Raider 3 disk I used to have on PC. It worked fine on Mario Kart Double Dash, Warcraft 3, Age of Mythology and Starfox adventures. No problems with them.

And what if it isn't a CD? A Sandisk Sansa e260r anyone?

Thanks Wiflewood for the link. I'll give it a try if I come across the product. In the meanwhile, someone earlier mentioned toothpaste? Strange... wonder if that actually works.

Another risky but potentially effective method. Toothpaste has abrasives in it that can soften the edges of scratches and make them less visible, however abrasives can also have the effect of creating more scratches, so use it with caution.

Cures headaches. May cause migraines? Sounds about right.

I use scratch removers from the local shopping centre.
