What kind of a question is that? Of course I'd smash my hand; at least then I could probably get it fixed.

Though if my foot was cut off instantly, the nerve endings would be severed and there'd be no pain...but I'd still rather not eat my own foot.

Foot cutting is pain and humiliation and disgustingness of eating your own foot. Plus you'd be crippled and have to have crutches for the rest of your life.

Hand smashing is something quite a lot of people probably do everyday when trying to hammer in nails and missing. Sure, it'll hurt, you'll probably brake your hand and have to have it bandaged for a month or so, but after that its fine.

Seriously, this 'If you rather' is a bit like saying "Would you rather be stung by a jellifish or having your leg bitten off by a shark", the decision is too easy to make.
