    His Dark Materials
Anyone read the trilogy? The books are:
Northern Lights/The Golden Compass (EU/US respectively)
    The Subtle Knife
    The Amber Spyglass

I completed the second book a few weeks ago, and waiting on money to buy the third.

The style of writing is different from the usual, in a sense. It's just not typical. I think the 'action scenes', and the bit of suspense and twists this book have makes it a must read.

I decided to read the series after seeing the trailer for "The Golden Compass" before Fantastic 4: RotSS or Evan Almighty started. I was like, 'yo, I bet this movie is a book!". It just seemed like a movie that came from a book. 'I'm gonna check the bookstore after this movie!'...
And guess what, I was right ^^

I've read them. They're an interesting trilogy but you have to read them together. If you leave a long gap between them you'll probably forget what is going on.

The first one is pretty good, but the second and third ones are tougher to read, and a little more...I wouldn't say thought centered, but something close to that.

Original, I'll give it that. Eccentric too. Not a casual read IMO.
