                Commuter rail, yes, it's called Amtrak in the northeast. Though admittedly it would not be as large as California. How long a distance are we talking DS?

                                Both. The subway or metro would the equivalent of the Tube in London, it's for the immediate metropolitan area. You can also take the commuter rails that travel across and between states.

                                    I assure you it can't be worse than NYC subways. I've actually seen rats on the rails for the metro, and have you ever been downtown during rush hour?

                                      Well NYC subways are downright filthy, but they doget you where you need to go pretty quickly and easily. And I've never been mugged or threatened on a subway, that only happens late at night.

                                        ^ Not even. I've taken the subway at 3AM in the morning, and it's normal. I swear, you even have to stand up, it's active and packed all day and night.
