If your performance in Euro 2008 is any indication, yes, the Netherlands will be a formidable team! In fact I don't think you guys have lost a qualifier. Show us how it's done!
Also for those interested, the other teams so far are South Africa (hosts), Australia, Japan, and both Korean nations.

There are qualifying tournaments, and teams have to have done so well in those tournaments to get into the year's World Cup. They're the first team from Europe to qualify this year. And yes, it's soccer.

What PDM said. The qualifying tournaments are split up based on the different confederations in the world (Asia, Europe, Africa, both Americas, and Oceania).

'Football' just makes more sense for me. I alternate between using both 'soccer' and 'football', I've just been trying to emphasize the latter more. It's not wrong, I just feel it most accurate.

Soccer sounds gay. Name it football please. Here in Holland we do have American Football, Baseball, Icehockey and all that, but they are way less popular then in your country (although I do watch it: for Football I'm for the Steelers, for Baseball I'm for the Pirates, and with Icehockey I'm for the Penguins... guess which city is my favorite?!).
Anyway, I think the world cup finale is gonna be Holland vs. Spain. And we will rock their boat.

in new zealand it's football and people still call it soccer. i don't see how soccer is wrong. i can see calling american football as such is wrong because it has nothing to do with feet, but soccer doesn't mean "handball" or anything. s'all good.
