I am looking into this claim and have been curious. Golden Sun was most certainly the first original RPG game on the GameBoy Advance. But was it also the first original RPG series introduced on any handheld system, in history?
Can anyone verify this?

He's got you there GL. Pokemon was the first to hit it big. I'm sure someone can find an obscure title that came even before Pokemon though.

I actually considered Pokemon, but I was thinking along the lines of Shining Force/Final Fantasy, etc., "classic JRPG" type games. It's a fair one though, I'll accept it.

It could be the first traditional style JRPG series to be created for handhelds, sure, that I'm aware of. I'm definitely not an expert on JRPGs though, not too big a fan of the genre in general.

final fantasy legend and final fantasy adventure. neither are ff games, the name was just tacked on to generate American sales. FFA is part of the mana series, and the three ffl games are the start of the SaGa series. sorry gl.

I've never really considered that before, the lack of rpgs like that before the GBA.

that's because the gb and gbc are comparative to the nes, as is the gba to the snes. and imo rpg's didn't truly kick off till the snes.

The NES still had Fire Emblem though. It was pretty big during those days.
