just now I clicked on the "view new posts button" and it told me that there where no new posts, and the background went back to the mercury (the default). I checked, and I was indeed logged out, but I don't understand why... I'm certain that I didn't accidentally press the "log out" button, as it is on the opposite end of the screen to the button I pushed when this happened (the "view new posts" button). what's going on?

perhaps you just got forced out accidentally by a glitch - it happens on all sites sometimes just cos some information got lost or re directed at some point. Then again i could be completely wrong...

What browser are you using?
Sometimes they can auto delete cookies, meaning you will get logged out and stuff like that. Forums cookies are usually wierd like that anyway, hard to explain.
