For an image where quality is a must, TIFF and Bitmap files are fine by me.

GIF - small, low color web graphics
JPG - large photographs (thousands of colors)
PNG - high-quality image with transparency (kinda combining JPG and GIF)
BMP & TIFF - Completely loseless image (zero compression or optimization) needed for mission critical work or used as the intial storage format.
I personally like PNG because it allows good compression on large images (like photos) but also allows the option of having a transparent background. If Internet Explorer supported transparency in PNGs then 99% of internet images would be PNGs.

I prefer jpg for high-quality images when I need compression and png for high quality with little to no compression. TIFFs are too large, and bmps are clunky and out of date when it comes to web graphics.

JPEG: Good compression for only a tad bit of color loss
BMP: Keeps original color, but file size is waaaaaaay too much. The only reason why you see me uploading images in bitmap format here is because I dont' have anything to save to JPEG to. (I swear, the computer I have, although it's not the one I use for Internet stuff, must be the only one in the world to have a version of mspaint that can save images in JPEG and GIF format)
GIF: Can be animated and file size is really low, but there's too much color loss involved.
PNG: Must like bitmaps, except smaller in file size, but IE doesn't support them initially

I think you have to run it trough a filter in IE or something, I don't remember..
I use GIF in small images and images that needs to be transparency.. For almost everythin else i use PNG..

Golly, I'm not stupid, I already know about that. He was saying he can't get them to go transparent on his computer (and he doesn't use IE I believe). The reason he can't is probably because he:
a. Isn't actually saving/optimizing the png properly in Photoshop
b. Doesn't have the program to do it
Although, assuming he isn't using just Paint (I think I remember him having Photoshop), I was going with option a.
BTW: I believe the trick is some utterly complicated <div> hack which is really more of a pain if you have a bunch of transparent PNGs :P . I remember reading about it somewhere. Google it and you should find it if you're interested or anything.

Thank you, Andross. I use FireFox, but I still don't know how to get PNG's transparent, though, it doesn't really matter, most of the people I talk to on MSN use IE, and so GIF is I use for transparent pictures...
Also, yes, I have photoshop, I just use Paint for stuff like sprites, then make them transparent elsewhere.
