Bandai To Buy Namco for $1.7 Billion
Bandai, the third largest toy maker in the world and the parent company of Bandai America, Bandai Visual and Sunrise, has announced that plans to buy videogame maker Namco ltd. and merge it with Bandai. Bandai has already purchased 6.3 percent of and is set to purchase the remainder of the company in a stock swap.

The original 6.3% of Namco was puchased with cash for 10.5 billion yen (US$99.9 million) in cash and Namco shareholders will receive 1 share each (per Namco sahre owned) in the new company, Kabushiki Kaisha Bandai Namco Holdings (Namco Bandai Holdings Inc in English). Current shareholders of Bandai will receive 1.5 shares each (per share owned) in Namco Bandai. The total value of the deal is approximately 175.3 billion yen (US$1.7 billion), 13% higher than Namco's closing market value on Friday.

Shareholders of the two companies will meet in June to approve the merger.

The new company will be formed on September 29 and will be directed by a mixed team of Bandai and Namco executives.

The two companies are expected to compliment each other's market weaknesses. Bandai is has a strong stable of character rights, but is weak in technology, while Namco is a video game technology leader but has few stong character brands.

Bandai Namco Holdings will be Japans second largest toy and videogame company, after Sega Sammy Holdings, which was formed when Sega Corp. and Sammy Corp. merged in October 2004.

What do you guys think? o.o

Bandai does have a gaming division; it is overwhelmingly overshadowed by its toy manufacturing, of course.

When I first heard about this, I was quite surprised. And I still am; it appears mergers are starting to become a standard now.

I believe this is due to the next-generation games, which are expected to have immense development costs and effort.

Ah well. Come September, Enter Namco Bandai Holdings Inc.

I'm sure I've seen some Bandai Video games before. maybe similar to Power Rangers video games or something related to their toy industry. Didn't they make digimon games, too?

Go to http://bandaigames.com/ for a list of Bandai's videogames.
Bandai didn't really buy Namco. They combined forces, so to speak, against all of the other videogame companies out there. If anyone knows what a "trust" is, here is a great example. They will now be known as Namco Bandai Holdings Inc. It is expected that they will focus more on online gaming, with a bigger focus on massive multiplayer and cell phone games like Nokia and Mobile. Bandai is making the Cowboy Bebop PS2 game that is released in December :P also they made the fairly good Inuyasha games. I don't really expect their games to go down the tube; rather, their profit will go up, their videogame quality will most likely go up (new company means new ideas, new opportunities for research and development, etc) so this combining seems to be pretty good for both parties, and for gamers everywhere. Tycho out.

Bandai will get the better end of this than Namco; Bandai games completely suck d|ck, while Namco games aren't very good.

Namco is the site I care about in this company merge. Hopefully, they will continue with making "Tales" games for the GC or PS2 by working with the Tales studio. If Camelot did this would we see better results?

I'm not sure, it'll depend on the company it's merging with. It may have good results, though I'm not sure if Camelot would want to merge with another company.

Going along with the Namco subject...well Star Fox: Assault was a pretty good achievement, too.
