Out of all the bands I have listened to and all the genres, the one band that stands out above the rest is 'Norther'. Fantastic guitar and keyboard solos, along with fast and technical drumming, strong metal and now clean vocals, thoughtful lyrics. Everything about this bands first 3 albums and their latest EP is amazing.

Freddie Mercury was simply amazing. His talents with both his voice and on the piano make him one of the best frontman ever. Some classic songs were made by Queen, such as We Will Rock You, We are the Champions, the Bohemian Rhapsody etc, etc, are still played today.
Queen took many risks and helped shape music.

I'll start with Pink Floyd. For one, with the album Dark Side of the Moon, they not only influenced pretty much the entire world (the album was on the Billboard Top 100 for an entire decade), but it also called for a change in the way albums were made - it wasn't so much as an increase in muscianship as it was a purpose for the album and a purpose for the lyrics. Pink Floyd also managed to keep their music highly technical and melodic, appealing to my sense of musicianship and good harmony. I'll just roll off a few songs that are some of the best you'll ever here: Money, Time, Brain Damage/Eclipse, Sheep, Wish You Were Here, Have a Cigar, Hey You, Comfortably Numb, Another Brick in the Wall (Pt. 2).
Let me move on to Neil Young. Neil Young is not for everyone, but you have to give him props for being culturally and musically relative for several decades. His Folk Rock sound doesn't sound folksy all the time - stirring riffs in Southern Man and Hey Hey, My My are pretty hard rock. But aside from his rougher edges, Young also has incredibly beautiful acoustic work, with The Needle and the Damage Done, After the Gold Rush, Heart of Gold, and Old Man. His work with Crazy Horse and Crosby, Stills, and Nash is also noteworthy, and Young even did some work with Pearl Jam back in the early 90s. He just released a new album as well (Prarie Wind) which I'll have to check out. Not to mention doing a whole week on Conan O' Brien.
Other bands and artists that are among the best include U2, Queen, David Bowie, and Bob Dylan. And for the best bands and artists within the last decade, I'll have to go with Fugazi, Radiohead, and The Pixies.

-Guns n Roses
Reason: Axl Rose's singing; Slash's guitar solos. Need I say more?
-Coldplay
Reason: Mostly what SOT said.
-Staind
Reason: It's just rocking, but can be pretty mellow-esque too.
-Muse
Reason: I just listened to them recently. I like the guitar so far, and the singer is spot-on too. I'm going to have to listen to some more pretty soon.
-Velvet Revolver
Reason: Head bangin'!!
-Queen
Reason: What St. Jimmy said.
But over all, the best band EVER was probably Guns n Roses. But, no, I don't have a favorite band. Might update more later. I'm pretty casual when it comes to music, so half the time when I'm listening to something I have no idea who it is. XD

PT is awesome for the name alone, but also they're probably my favorite band because Steven Wilson is a genius and the songs are extremely intelligent and perfect in every way.
Genesis was very influential and where one of the first amazing prog-rock bands. They where Marillion's main influence, which is really awesome, too. Basically, if you aren't convinced, go and listen to the entirety of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" and/or "Supper's Ready" from their Foxtrot album. I really wish Peter Gabriel hadn't left....

Chris Cheney's guitar solos.
Good lyrics.
Scott Owen's talented double bass playing.
Andy Strachan's elite drumming.
Yip!
Best band ever.

They aren't my favourite by far, in fact i've hardly listened to them at all, but music would not be what it is today if not for these geniuses.

If I was to list my favourite bands I would probably say DT, Apocalyptica and Opeth. The only band here that is truly remarkable and deserving of the 'best band ever' title would be Opeth.

My bests:
Boards of Canada. To me, their music fills any type of mood. And, it's also thought up, instead of just shoving in any electronic sound.
Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor is simply a genius at lyrics and all the styles of music he's used in his songs. I love that heavy industrial-to-piano (piano as in the style, not the instrument).

muse- The people here got me hooked on this group. They're great for playing air guitar :P
acceptance- they have some neat sounds they play on their guitars. Their vocalist is pretty good too.
relient k- their songs are just plain funny. Sadly, most of them make a good point, too. I also like the music, it's pretty sweet.

No freaking way those two go together x.x;
Today, I listened to a cover of "Oops I did it again!" by Children of Bodom. We couldn't even finish the song even if it was in a black metal style.

Basically these two quotes sum up my thoughts exactly. The only thing that's not really going for them at the moment is that they've been a little too dormant for a while now... But meh, I've never ever gotten sick of any of their music and each song is so distinct from the other, but I feel that they all can still directly identify as a "Pearl Jam" song.
I don't really judge a band or an artist by what influences they've had to the music industry really... I judge by my own standards of quality within the music. So yerm... Carry on. >_>;

I've changed mine to Dream Theater now.
I've been listening to them intensley the past couple of days, and they have simply blown me away. For starters they have about an 18 year career span, with 8 studio albums, 4 live albums, a few singles, and a DVD (well at least one that I know of).
Aside from the length and productivity of their amazing career, their music is simply amazing.
John Petrucci is an amazing guitarist. From his 3 minute technical guitar solos, to the simplest of riffs. Mike Portnoy is a drummer who has always been thrown into top drummer lists, and now I know why. He is incredibly tight, technical, but can also play the most simple beats and make them sound great. Everything he does fits in with the music. I know Jordan Rudess' work from the Liquid Tension Experiment songs I have heard (basically DT minus LaBrie), and he doesn't hold back in DT either. And James LaBrie's vocals, who I didn't like at first listen, have grown on me. He is a great vocalist.
So overall I think Dream Theater is the best band ever. Their simply awesome mix of progressive metal, rock, jazz makes every song a delight to listen to. You can't go past them.

I think of Dream Theater as the Cirque Du Soleil of music. you look at what they're doing and go "that's impossible. no one can do that". They are definately the most technically brilliant band I know. I don't think that they are the most creative or original, but I just listen to them when I feel like being amazed, or when I just feel like I want to listen to something REALLY fast and just rock out to it.

For rock there's: My Chemical Romance, Coldplay, Greenday, Nickelback, Avenged Sevenfold...
For pop there's: Britney Spears, Ashlee Simpson, T.A.T.U...
For rap there's: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Kanye West...
For religious there's: SonicFLOOD...
For J-pop: Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hamasaki...
For Reggae: Beres Hammond, Richie Spice, Jah Cure...
For Soca: Shurwayne Winchester, Tallpree...
As you can see I listen to every possible genre, there's more artist I favor, but can't list them. Overall though, those I listed in rock are my favourites.

Either Blink 182 because they have amzing songs with great drums, especially in " always"
or
Yellowcard, because they combine rock with orchestral instruments, which is actually a good mix

Or disturbed, great singer who has a lot of variey in his voice, he can go from being really low and "growly" to being really high and melodic, also the lyrics in their songs rock, like avenged sevenfolds. Overall they rock aswell.
