So I've been reading some early reviews, and I have to say I'm a bit... concerned.

Graphics, music, battle system, character development are all highly praised.

Not true-- entirely. Though, yes, the first 8 hours of the game are linear corridor runs, the game entirely changes, and becomes "Final Fantasy" after that point. I can point you in the direction of someone who's played it all the way through, has no gripes with pointing out it's faults, and loves it.

FFXIII has an 82 on metacritic, interesting, didn't expect that even if I don't think it'll be that great.

from what i had heard from jap friends it opens up huge, but i came to learn that that's the monster hunter/sidequest part of the game.. the main game will pretty much be that linear the entire game. i bought the guide, and i took a quick peak at some later chapter maps, and it appears to all be corridor runs. tad dissapointing, but like i said, the story and battle system should far make up for it. plus, i've always been more excited for Versus, which i've heard has an OVERWORLD map.. not FF10's psuedo-map, not FF12's giant territories-- an actual overworld map where you move between cities and dungeons.

and ya i did buy the game, but my hori fighting stick came in today aswell, and playing blazblue with a stick just feels orgasmic.

Okay, this is coming from playing around with a demo for maybe a half hour, so I know this isn't a good impression, but here's my thoughts. Start off with the good stuff.

The game looks BEAUTIFUL. I can ignore the art looks like something that a Japanese Star Wars prequel fanatic could come up with because it looks technically fantastic. Jesus. Also, the characters seem to be written to act more like normal people rather than bad anime characters (ignoring Vanille) but why does Sazh have to be the one with the chicken in his hair? Racist bastards.

That out of the way, what is so great about this battle system? Granted the demo only gave me an average of two attacks per character, but it seems like a terrible mixture of XII and VII's battle systems. Just hitting auto-attack every fight netted me 5 stars every time. Add that to the fact that you only control one character, I can see fights getting dull incredibly quickly even with extra attacks. Everything in this game looks amazing, but all-in-all it seems like only a minor a step forward from XII.

...again, impressions from a demo, But if the game really does substantially improve with a couple hours put in, they should've put the demo there or something.

Because it's too much of a movie. 10 minute cut scene, followed by 30 seconds of walking forward, followed by another 10 minute cut scene. I like the battle system but like WD said, all you really need to do is hit Auto-Attack, at least that's all I needed to do till I got to that first Fal'cie thing, then I saw the need for two medics and a sentinel...

I've done 3 Eidolons and that Fal'Cie that starts with B. And just some of the random fights are difficult sometimes. It's not the battle system I really have an issue with, I couldn't imagine controlling all 3 characters in fights, you would waste too much time giving orders you'd get pummelled, I just not immersed in it, like I said I plan on finishing it, but I got to a point where I didn't mind stopping and I'm yet to pick it back up.

You never NEED to use buffers in FF games, you can always make your way through by simply using attack and your first set of spells (fire, lightning, water etc.), but it sure makes things easier. Comando, Ravager, Sabatuer.. deprotect, deshell.. Ravager, Ravager, Ravager, stagger, death. You wont 5star the later battles, or even survive for that matter, if all you use are medics and Sentinels (which, imo, are relatively useless late game).

and it's not that you like mw2, it's that you think it should be goty, despite its obvious flaws.

Besides GTA, show me a 7th gen game with that many flaws. I love how you put up with it all, without the slightest sense of disappointment in the developers. WELL MADE GAMES ARE NOT THIS BROKEN, not every game has glitches to this extent...

the AI makes decisions based on who needs healing the most, regardless of leader, you get spellks later on that heal everyone for a decent amount

Because it generally happens when I have a Sentinel. I get that that is what they're supposed to do, but surely the party leader is more important.

Skidz. GOTY is personal preference. MW2 was the best game I played last year, faults and all, why then would I put ODST or Borderlands as GOTY then if I enjoyed MW2 more?

Just got this game and played it for almost three hours straight. First impressions...holy fuck, this game is far and away better than FFXII. Thank you God. Problem is that it's beyond linear, like...Kingdom Hearts II linear, but I heard that all the sidequests and stuff open up a ton of exploration.

The battle system is fantastic, I'm liking it more than I thought I would. Can't say much about the story, although it still looks to be the same ol' "save the world" one...but I love all the characters! Except Hope, for fuck's sake, I hate him.

it didnt help that i died 3 times because i wasn't aware that if you don't have the Medic - Sabateur paradigm set as your active paradigm, you will not survive his opening onslaught.

Got all Eidolons now and am in some big tower, chapter 11 bout 30ish hours in, long game, kinda want it to be over so I can move on.

i finished at about 45 hours

working through the secret bosses, 5 starred most of them, Commando + Commando + Commando is a truely ridiculous paradigm; killing bosses with 3 million HP in about 40 seconds is always fun

Still need more grinding before i can farm Adamantortoises =/

That gives me hope then, from my googling I'd gathered it was a 50-60 hour game, 15 hours is alot more appealing then 30.

Aside from the Cie'th quests does it open up much more?

there are a few other bonus things, but the bulk of it is the marks

i cant think of any marks (i've fought atleast) that i'd struggle to get 5 stars on, i got 4 stars on captain 9 million HP simply because i wasnt dealing quite enough damage, the only other difficult achievement is Treasure Hunter and thats just griiiiiiind

5 hours into the game.

I have mixed feelings so far. The Paradigm system is opening up and battles are slowly starting to become more engaging. I particularly enjoy how it seems to be better to have Paradigms with very specific goals (i.e. Ravager/Ravager/Commando for all-out attack chains and staggering, Medic/Sabeuteur/Synergist for healing and status boosts) as opposed to trying to have a balance of one attacker, one status effector, and a Medic.

Still feel a bit claustrophobic in the game somehow... it's refreshing not to worry about HP or talking to NPC characters, but it can feel isolated at times too. It's interesting that you switch between party leaders so that you get to "know" the characters, but I wouldn't mind some consistency. Names and events can be confusing, but I think I'm starting to work them out.

So I've reached chapter seven. Guess I still haven't reached the section where the game becomes good because I haven't got past 'meh' feelings yet. The story's lacking the sense of grand scale that FF games usually have. Focusing on specific characters is good and all, but it means the world they inhabit doesn't feel fully developed to me.
Also, I haven't played as Snow in like 7 hours. He's gonna have accumulated a lot of points.

A friend brough this over yesterday and from the opening sequence I was amazed. Never played a FF game before but I think this has converted me. Stunning, stunning graphics, best I've seen on 360 and a plot that, an hour in, I'm already totally immersed in.

Using Lightening, Sazh and Fang. Want to use Snow instead of Sazh but I love using haste.
Just got to Eden's chamber thing, some amazing cutscenes just happened, love HDMI.

Swapped out Sazh for Hope after I remembered I'd given Hope haste, so much better, only slightly less Str and Hp then Sazh, but 3 times the magic and is medic as well.

Also finished game today, just over 40 hours, don't think I'll be going for all the missions or the ultimate weapons. Fantastic though, worth it, slow start aside.

Probably should've realised earlier from reading on the net how most people have either Vanille/Hope in their party, never read anyone had Sazh, was just hooked on Haste.

I looked at my achievements and noticed it took me about 1.5 months to get that 40 hours of game time, video games are definitely less of a priority now. Actually took the games out of my 360 after finishing FF13, planning to only use it as a media device now, use my time more productively now.

It looks like it's the most balanced.
It's strange how my opinion about the characters have changed over the course of the game. Originally I liked Snow and hated Hope, now it's reversed. I guess they did a fairly decent job of developing Hope's character, which is strange since he's got a pretty cliched 'they killed my family and I'm gonna moan about it' set up.

I actually never realized that, but I definitely do use Sentinels in my Paradigms... so apparently the one time I switch to one that doesn't have a Sentinel, he takes the chance to cast Doom. That is frustrating.

That, and the fact that I managed to stagger him for the final time JUST as the Doom counter finished. Can anyone get me one of those FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF- images?

Solidarity (COM+SEN+MED) is the best paradigm for grinding out battles and seeing how 5 star ratings are irrelevant during the storyline it just makes sense to use it. Use triple or double Ravager til the their stagger gauge is close to breaking, then switch to Solidarity and enjoy lots of free damage with your Commando

^ Thanks for the tip. COM/RAV/SEN has definitely helped a lot, I think I take for granted now just how much a Sentinel helps out. That, along with MED/MED/SEN for the worst cases, and COM/COM/RAV for when enemies are finally staggered, is a good set to have.

How do I beat Odin? Every time I go into battle he just fucks me up before I get a chance to hit him once. Using Rav/Rav and before I can even switch to Rav/Medic Hope is dead.

Just beat him after a stroke of luck where he decided to attack Lightning for once and not Hope.
