Aang's mastered Waterbending since the North Pole, now he has to learn Earthbending and heads to Ba Sing Se, the Earth Kingdom capital. Along the way they come across Toph who joins them, and along the way they find out about the Eclipse. Where next? Well, it's time to get the Earth King's support of the war, so they continue on to Ba Sing Se.

In other words, the plot was more structured. They always a purpose or reason to be going somewhere, and this is not even mentioning the very interesting and dramatic changes that Zuko goes through, we really see him mature a lot.

But all Season 3 has been about... well, it's hard to say. Every episode seemed to have a different purpose, it's all so aimless. In fact, I would so much as argue that besides The Day of Black Sun, Season 3 simply seemed very much random and without a "true" coherent plotline driving it forward, even though it's just about time for Aang to learn Firebending (which he has) and to face the Fire Lord.

Let's recap. The episode number in bold is what I think is "very relevant" to a structured plotline.

201 - The Avatar State - very relevant, we find out more about Aang's abilities (and limitations) as he channels the past avatars. Also they head towards Omashu (key here, they're heading somewhere) for Aang to learn Earthbending.
202 - The Cave of Two Lovers - fluff, cute fluff.
203 - Return to Omashu - The city has been captured by the Fire Nation, along with King Bumi. The first time they face Azula and co., and it ends with Bumi telling Aang of what's to come (that they would eventually meet Toph)
204 - The Swamp - not hugely relevant, but we see Princess Yue, Katara's mother, and more importantly, Aang's vision of Toph, a search for which continued from the last episode.
205 - Avatar Day. random filler.
206 - The Blind Bandit - Aha! They finally get to Toph, a culmination of 3 episodes worth.
207 - Zuko Alone - More light is shed on Zuko's past, and his character. Character development is strong in the second book, and this is the best example.
208 - Bitter Work - Remember the Earthbending Aang was trying to learn? Finally leads up to it.
209 - The Desert - Aha! A new revelation. There's an Eclipse coming! Where next? BA SING SE.

210 - 213, all about heading to Ba Sing Se.
214 - 218, all about exploring and learning more about the city, the Dai Li, the Earth King, etc.
Season Finale - all that tension of reaching Ba Sing Se, all that character development for Zuko, reaches a high point with climactic changes.

With the exception of two or three "fillers", every episode in Book 2 is relevant in someway.

Now, for comparison:
301 - The Awakening. Aang wakes up and catches up on things since Ba Sing Se fell to Azula and the Fire Nation. Fair enough.
302 - The Headband. Aang dresses up, enters a Fire Nation school, and the entire episode builds up to a school dance (I enjoyed this episode very much, but still)
303 - The Painted Lady. Random spirit that appears in a random village? Can you say filler?
304 - Sokka's Master. Sokka wants to do more to help the group, gets a swordmaster to teach him. Not bad...
305 - The Beach - Avatar, swimsuit edition?
306 - The Avatar and the Firelord - nothing else to say except this episode is genius. Really was one of the highlights of the brilliant writing.
307 - The Runaway - Money, schemes, plans, Toph and Katara yelling. Mhmm.
308 - The Puppetmaster - this is where Katara learns bloodbending, and that itself made the episode worthwhile. But notice something here - Remember the Day of Black Sun? Isn't it coming soon? Why aren't we building up to it? Ahh, that leaves...
309 - Nightmares and Daydreams - arguably, I felt the writing here was very rushed. It's as if the group forgot and just now remembered that the Eclipse was coming. So Aang starts freaking out about it, etc.
The Day of Black Sun - we all remember this one.

See what happened there? They're so disconnected, considerably more random, and are simply "not linked" by anything, except a rush to the Day of Black Sun, which somehow seems to slip under the radar for a solid five episodes.

Anyway, to justify my vote -
I voted airbending because it fits my real life personality. Airbending is more of a defensive fighting form, rather than an agressive form, and I'm personally more a defender than an agressive person.
Also, I'm personally fond of the glider and the ability to run fast =). Earthbending, imo, is the 'cooler' bending though.

I honestly fear for this show D: how much longer can it go on like this? I mean they can't just keep going after the fire lord. I think they need to put that way off, and have some intermittent bad dude to focus on for a couple of seasons. They could start by just AIRING THE NEXT FREAKING EPISODE.

I agree that the build-up to Sozin's Comet was a little weak. The best sense of continuity in Avatar came in the 2nd book, with the focus on Earthbending and heading to Ba Sing Se, it all flowed very well.

Like PS said, usually there would be weeks between episodes. That said, while the Ember Island Players (the episode before the finale) may not have done much to hype up the finale, it did summarize the series in a very creative and amusing manner, and for that I enjoyed it.

Don't look at Sozin's Comet as just another bunch of episodes; it should be looked at separately from the rest of the series, including Book 3. It's absolutely brilliant on its own, the production values are much higher, and it sums up the best and long-awaited aspects of Avatar.

omgomgomgomg I just watched the last 7 episodes. FRICKEN AWESOME. I have no words, it was incredible, I love how they ended it, like it was kinda cliched how everything worked out but sometimes that's exactly what you want.

I really thought there was going to be another book and I am sad it ended, but it ended awesome, so I'm happy.

er one complaint: the lion turtle. It was just too obvious that they needed some way around killing the fire lord so they just introduce this sudden unexplained plot device and bam! problem solved. Would've been better if that had flowed more, but oh well.

Seriously though, I haven't been so sad about a show ending since Firefly.

You're trying to act superior here, insisting on a loophole or whatever the hell you want.

The Lion Turtle is an ancient creature, before the time of the Avatar, highly tuned with the Spirit World and the real world. Why is it so hard to believe that as the Avatar, as an ethereal being, that something like that couldn't happen? Aang was separate and on his OWN, to find the wisdom and insight he needed to face the Fire Lord.

It works, it makes sense, and no amount of "lol im da smarta$$" can change that.

I'm not saying that! What I'm saying is don't just be like "I think that's lame" and not try to make sense of it. There is a reasoning behind it, that's all, don't close yourself off of that.

That said, I will agree with you that I found the Fire Lord Ozai vs. Aang fight a little short and yes even a bit easy. It started off epic in scale, and it became clear that even without the Avatar State, Aang could have severely wounded him had he gone for the final blow from the beginning.

Though, that was the premise of the finale, a lot of it had to do with Aang needing to recognize his role of the Avatar vs. the beliefs the monks taught him.

Ahh, needless to say though, the Agni Kai between Azula and Zuko was flawless. I still get chills watching it.

The Zuko vs. Azula battle was awesome, there was drama, bloodshed'ish thing and it was well done overall. That's what the Avatar vs. Firelord battle missed, neither really got hurt, nothing changed really during the battle and it was a bit too short. The last 5? episode aka the sozin's comet movie as a whole was good, not great. Maybe they just let too much happen in too short a time. I wasn't left in awe as I probably expected.

Looking on the whole series though, that was great. The water book was entertaining and it caught my attention. The Earth book, was great, that's the one that got me addicted. The Fire book was awesome as well, the first 5 episodes were a bit wierd, but needed to get the story running again. Up to the end from there was equally addicting, climaxing at the "Day of the black sun" episodes. Earth book, episode 10 - end of book were the best of the series.

But no series can perfect, but because they never go exactly as I want the story to go. But if it went the way I wanted it go, I wouldn't like it either because I'm crap at creating drama. So meh, I wanted a bigger Zuko story, that was a far more interesting story then the Avatar story. I wanted more sword vs. sword/spear/other weapon action. I wanted Zuko to end up with someone else than that emo knives girl. I wanted a bigger part for the uncle. I wanted more action, more drama, more of everything. I wanted another book.

They did finish the series well, though, and they left me wanting more. So it must be a good series. Otherwise I'd just be "O, that was fun" and never give it a second thought.

Er okay, clear this up for me because I still do think it was a cop out: was the lion turtle ever mentioned or elaborated on before the finale? It's entirely possible I'm forgetting that they discussed this earlier, in which case, that's a good set up and was executed well. If not, yeah cop out.

I think the series is pretty damn perfect as is, which is good because alot of shows run until the stories get bad and the writing gets sloppy. However it was so good that I wish there were more :rolleyes: also more witty lines in the finale would've been awesome, that was kinda the highlight of the series for me. Zuko story was awesome and ended awesome and was awesomeness in all it's awesome glory.

My friends and I cheered when we saw the trailer (we filled up an entire row). People looked at us like we were nerds X3

What makes me happy is the kid ACTUALLY looks like Ang, and the airbending looks rather awesome. How they pulled that one off? It better be better than the DBZ live action movie...

Each of the live action movies are faithful to each book. This first movie to be released in 2010 is based on Book: Water.

I'm not going to lie, I am very unimpressed. The casting for the live action movie goes against the rich cultural diversity of the Avatar world. Why are they primarily Caucasian when you have clearly Eastern races/ethnicities?

Not to mention, the way the teaser shows the film, it's become just another generic "kung fu" flick with the stereotypical music. Even the title screen, "The Last Airbender" logo, looks like just another generic movie release.


I know I'm being overly pessimistic. I will wait until we see more footage obviously and see the acting, but right now I'm going to stick with the animation, and cross my fingers that my favorite series of all time is not butchered.

I realize I'm a little late to the party, but I can't believe M. Night Shyamalan has put his name on something with such a huge budget. Is this gonna have some crazy twist at the end? Is the director way out of his element?

Regardless, the production quality looks awesome. I'm pumped.

The creators of Avatar are closely involved with the movie. From what's been shown, it looks like it's going to be a faithful enactment of the first book (Water). It's expected to follow the plot closely (with the actual episodes serving as a template) and so we probably will not see any major changes.

I still have my doubts though... the movie seems too serious from the trailers, and part of the defining character of Aang is how lighthearted and jumpy he is. Still, won't judge yet...

Though I'm short on Avatar experience, I can tell you that M. Night is very good at creating mysterious and thick atmospheres in his movies - but if ten minutes of The Happening taught me anything, his attempts at creating humour or implicit light moments just result in huge fail.

You'll likely see this carry into the movie - at least in some ways.

Just saw the movie on premiere night and...


It was pretty much a let down. Don't get me wrong, the special effects were amazing, the costumes were great but...the acting...oh god...

I know everyone was in a fit about the casting and how they're not being true to their "origins" (like aang was a little white kid when he's supposed to be Asian). But i think they actually pulled off looking like their respective characters...except Zuko, and I won't even go into how much I hated that actor and how he butchered Zuko's character. My beef was how they warped the characters. Sokka, who was the cartoon version's comic relief was portrayed in the movie as a protective warrior. Katara was just kinda...there. There was waaaay too much emphasis on that water princess, and her acting made me want to drive a fork into my leg as i sat there. "Our city was built around it! Lets go! ;) *as city is being ****ing ATTACKED*"

Also, they left out a ton of shit from book one, though this is probably more acceptable of its many flaws, as a lot of movie adaptations end up having to remove parts of the story to keep the film within a certain time frame. But still...they left out some pretty important character developing scenes.

overall I would say, son, I am dissapoint. I want my $10.50 back >.>

That's the general impression I've gotten. You can't achieve the subtlety of a 20-episode season in an hour and a half, and especially when the film removes some of the most important aspects of the series. It's become just another generic action flick with the actual Avatar: The Last Airbender elements seeming secondary to the movie as a whole (according to one of my friends).

The casting should have been warning signs from the beginning. This was only meant as a way to profit from the series, not actually do it justice.
