Oblivion's combat and magic system is waaay superior to Morrowind's, but overall I think Morrowind is a better game. Oblivion feels like it was dumbed down for the 10-year-old Xbox fanboys. At least I have my mods.

I'd really like to get this game, but I dont think i'd have the time to play it. Its not a game where you can have a 5 minute go on it and accomplish something, you really have to work at it. It's a shame as well, as I really wanted to get it.

Although it may not seem like it, I have quite an active life. I rarely get a chance to sit down and play a game for a few hours, apart from Friday night. The average sitting for a game for me is about half an hour, and with oblivion, I reckon it would have to be around 2-3 hours. That's why i'm more into shooters; because you can do a lot in a short time. In half an hour you can play a few online matches, or a campaign or two. In oblvion, play for half an hour and you'd gain one level. When I leave school, i'm going to have a study leave where i'll get a job, earn money and have a lot more free time to play games, as working in say; a shop doesnt require homework or coursework deadlines. You just turn up and do it. Unfortunately, by that time Oblivion will be dated and we'll be playing video games through sunglasses.

Caael, with your time schedule, the Tears of the Fiend mod would probably take you about two weeks to finish.

Long mod, good story and quite suprising. I still have one loose end to tie up though... Which I will not spoil if WD decides to try it.

Going to do a complete reinstall tomorrow, all new mods and characters. I stopped playing Oblivion because I modded it from the head all the way down to the toes, and it was therefore a bit crashy, and I got sick of it. This time I'm going to limit myself to about 30 mods to keep it running smooth.

I absolutely can't stand the leveling system in Oblivion so I used Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul to get rid of it. The problem with Oscuro's is that it's a bit huge and conflicts with a lot of mods, and it' also a bit hard. So Nos, is Francesco's any good?

And what mods would you personally recommend?

Heh, I used the invisable armour technique to complete the main quest. My character is also very overpowered and I can kill most things with one sneak attack. Dont use my full Deadric armour, prefer normal / Dark brotherhood cloths.

Got the 360 version so I can only download the official mods... got most of em.

How? By trying to find all the flying rats? Or living in a world that feels "Dead". Seriously after playing Oblivion no other games feels "Real" for me. Oblivion just has so much to do outside of the normal things. Each character has a story many have names and lives and you as a character actually have consequences for your actions, both morally and fundamentally.

And that is just the 360 version. The PC version offers unlimited amount of content that would last a player several years.

I guess I've played too much Oblivion, then, 'cause I feel like I've done pretty much everything-- well, no I haven't done EVERYTHING (and this is the guy who's played weeellll over 200 hours despite what my Xfire says, granted, this is the PC version), but it's gotten to the point where everything feels like I'm just slashing up goblins and Bandits. The world really does feel a little dead, with almost ghost-town like moments and the lack of travellers in the wilderness. EVERYTHING wants to kill you outside of towns, except for the deer and Imperial Guards. @_@ This can be remedied with mods, but not entirely "fixed".

There really aren't many consequences other than paying fines or being rejected healing at a Chapel. Other than that you can get into as much trouble as you please and as long as you pay money nobody cares.

Console version of Oblivion, and vanilla Oblivion in general makes me an unhappy gamer. Thank god for a wonderful modding community that did the job that Bethesda wouldn't. I probably won't even buy Fallout 3 right away; wait for some mods to come out.

I agree that the outside world can feel lifeless at times (And by that I mean most of the time) and that is something that needs fixing.

But I have played Oblivion for almost 200 hours and I have only ever explored dungeons if they were related to a quest, I spend most of my time doing other things like er... stuff.

As for bandits... high charm spell ; ) Also the money thing stops becoming a rpoblem at higher levels but most of the time you will do everything you can to save those coins.

Anyways eventually I plan to get my 6 followers and slowly take over Cyrodill through Guerilla tactics.

But then, this is largely due to quicksave + quickload which is specific to PC games.

The music in Oblivion is good, it sets the atmosphere well enough. But after playing it for a while, there's not very many different songs. So I say music for this game overall is just passable.

Dungeon/cave music is nice and eerie. Music in the wilderness is nice and doesn't intrude. Music in towns is... eh it's just okay. Battle music is nice and tense.

But there's not nearly enough music overall. The music isn't specific to any location, you go to the Nibenay Basin and it's the same exact music you'll hear in Anvil Bay, which is clear across the Province from the Nibenay Basin. Same for dungeons and towns. I don't know why it was done for this way. If I were in charge of music, I would've made unique themes and tracks for parts of Cyrodiil, towns, and certain dungeons.

I don't know if you can add music to the 360 version of Oblivion, but you can in the PC version, which helped.

Holy crap, Yahtzee reviewing Oblivion? Isn't it a little late? Two YEARS late? Well, whatever. Those were some problems Oblivion had... but Oblivion is, in fact, an action/sandbox RPG.

So my point here is, the biggest problem with Vanilla Oblivion is the leveling system which basically goes against all the rules of sandbox games. One of the best things about sandbox games is that you can level your character up all the way to the highest levels of the game, then do the quests and absolutely wipe the floor with the enemy. You can't do this in vanilla Oblivion.

Can you imagine a Pokemon game with a leveling system? You begin the game, get your starter Pokemon, and level it up to 100. Then you go to the first gym, fight the Gym Leader to find all his Pokemon are also lvl 90+. Whoo!

To be honest, I thought the best thing about Oblivion was the diversity of the landscapes. Snowy mountains near Bruma, sprawling jungle-esque wildlands to the east, redwoods to the west around Chorrol, meadows on Anvil's bay, swamps around Leyawiin, flat plains around Skingrad for wineyards. Then again... I'm using the Natural Environments mod... XD


Anyways, I read Yahtzee's column on the back page of PC gamer recently where he was talking about his impressions so far on Fable 2. He used... PUNCTUATION! Holy ****. He was talking about how he thought it was a lame idea that the player had to get a job, and monsters didn't drop any money. He said that the player had an option to buy dungeons (according the Lionhead) and he said something witty about how the player could downsize the dungeon's security department so that the player could get all the loot with little difficulty. He made references to Morrowind, where he seemed to talk about it in a positive light. Hrmm.

I actually didn't know fast travelling existed until about a week into the game when it said I could fast travel. i.e. One reason I ****ing hate Leyawin.

You shouldn't be able to fast travel just ANYWHERE. More like, a sort of a taxi system between the cities and other safe points.

That's why those cart mods a ****ing great. They add a touch of "holy **** never seen that before" while you're attending to moving from city to city. Although I can honsetly say I can never be bothered to walk from the Market District to say, the Temple District.

It's just that Oblivion never felt particularly dangerous in the wilderness. If you're losing a fight, you can run away and find a guard to fight for you. It's likely the guard will distract the monster so you can run away and wait for the fight music to stop. Then you can fast travel back to a town if you have no potions and the area has too many monsters for you to rest for an hour.

That's why a taxi system between the cities and other safe spots (like a few small villages whom I forget the names) on the wilderness is a lot better.

Fast travelling within a city like IC is okay, there's not really anything new to see in cities once you've filled in all the Fog of War for that city's map. Oh, and that Better Cities mod I showed you last night adds map points in the towns besides IC. So, for example, you can now fast travel directly to the Chapel in Skingrad rather than having to fast travel to the city's gate and then walking to the Chapel.

Yeah, I used his Skingrad mod before I had to restart. Loved it. Especially since one of them was essentially right behind the house in Skingrad.

1) Is there any way to escape the guards, because i ran right into the middle of this forest for ages, with nothing here

2) If I go find a guard, can i turn myself in, or will they keep trying to kill me?

1. Nice.

2. Yes you can. If they attack you on sight, just hold Block and talk to them. That's how you yield. Guards will always allow you to yield. Normal citizens, most of the time. Bandits depend on how much they like you from my experience and creatures never will let you. Anyway, if the guards see you and don't attack (which is pretty much all the time when you're wanted), you'll get the same option menu. If your bounty is less then 1000, they won't try to arrest you unless you talk to them. 1000+, they'll try to arrest on sight.

I am indeed in the thieves guild. I loved that quest where you had to steal the bust of that woman. Instead of being stealthy, i ran in there, stole it, ran out. The tomb guard was following me trying to attack me, so I ran to the guards who raped her.

Anyway, new mod time. It's called SoVvM which of course stands for Solstheim-Vvardenfell-Mournhold. It's a pretty big file and doesn't need OBSE. It isn't Morroblivion so that's good too.

And it's manual install so I won't have to replace my body meshes if it wants to! Huzzah!

Edit: There is DistantLOD too, a lot of it, but none of it would conflict with any normal Oblivion mod LOD. It's all like zzzMournhold and zzzMorrowind. No replacing here.

I finally figured out why some things showed up as corrupted in game. I had to turn the texture size to large.

I am doing that. It's not really that difficult. Doing the Fighters Guild first, then Thieves, then Dark Brotherhood, then Mages. It's not too difficult.

And any tips on making money? I want to buy some good houses, but i only have about 10k.

It's not that difficult with the dumbed down Vanilla version alright.

Tips for making money? It gets really easy the higher level you are. Just wait until above level 15 or so then go into Bandit caves, everyone should be wearing glass armor with big glass weapons. Take as much as you can carry, then just sell them to the merchant with most money. (above 1,500 Septims)

Take some feather enchanted stuff with you, or a few feather spells. I always hate it when I have to leave quite good loot behind because of emcumberance.

For how much money they're worth, glass armor/weapons are really light. Always pick them up first. You'll make more money every trip because of it.

I have the shrouded hood and armour at the moment, and they've served me through all of the game. I haven't really felt the need for more armour, because it provides adequate defence, and some pretty good fortify's.

And when you come head of the fighters guild, you get a monthly pay or something which is a good way to make money.

A minor flaw with Oblivion: Whats the point in having a high acrobatics skill if there's invisible walls everywhere if you jump higher than 4 feet?

You can work your way up to a high spot and snipe civilians/guards with your bow and arrow?

You can jump and attack at the same time, thus being hard to hit?

Thats why I said minor; there's no real reason to jump up high, but it's annoying when you're trying to take a shortcut across a roof to run into a barrier.

Caael they are not invisable walls. Its just that you cannot jump on certain terrains, but there is a trick that can make you jump on them.

Maxed acrobatics makes you jump on water which is kind of handy, too bad there a quite low level (alteration I think) water walking spells.

Maxed athletics aren't that good either, but meh, I guess acrobatics is a skill with more potential then athletics.

There's a necklace that lets you walk on water which I have, defeating the purpose of mastering Acrobatics but w/e. It increases so easily I might as well master it, just to say I did.

After getting to a certain level of Acrobatics you can perform rolls and backflips which is a lot of fun.

Yeah, i've got to that level.

I've maxed out my speed now, my agility is almost maxed out too, so i'm going to start putting extra points on endurance, to increase my fatigue because I run out so incredibly quickly its not even funny. Seriously, after about 5-6 jumps i've run out of fatigue.

...dude you should've been maxing out Endurance FIRST. More Endurance = more HP everytime you level up. >.<

Man this only proves Oblivion really was too dumbed down, your character would be DYING if you were playing Morrowind. XP

I find speed more useful. Besides, i've only died twice, both times in Oblivion because of those ****ing mines that blow up.

Edit: Completed thieves guild quest, now i'm the Gray Fox and have the Cowl. Next up, the Dark Brotherhood.

Already did. As I said, I only got up to 250k or it would make the game broken without the need to make money. Plus when I reset the updates, I had to do all of the Battlehorn stuff again ( though not Frostcrag and Dunbarrow for some reason).

Frostcrag's the best one. Battlethorn's pretty cool too. I prefer to roleplay as good or chaotic but well-meaning characters so I don't really use the Vile Lair.

You should get Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. They're amazing, but you'd have to have the updates to play them.

I also bought Mehrunes Razor, which should be fun. According to Tom, it has some pretty good armour which means I can finally unequip my shrouded armour which I've had equipped from the moment I got it.

I completely forgot about Mehrunes Razor! You're going to like it, it's a huge dungeon complete with a town in the middle. Great for stealth characters. It's my favorite aside from KotN and Shivering Isles. Great for a few visits even after you've already gotten the Razor, because of the nice loot.

I always go through it multiple times, because Jauffre and Baurus aren't marked essential there and can be killed so I try to save them. That's one of the problems with the system in Oblivion, the monsters get stronger but your allies stop getting stronger sooner it seems. If you care for them, you should do that quest soon.

My favorite area is the Nibenay Basin going down to the Nibenay Valley. No civilization for miles, just hills and forest and some swamp. With the Portable Campsite mod you could practically just live out there by yourself and hone your skills, not bump into one person for weeks.

I kind of like the Jerall mountains. Not much to there but I like going up to that campsite (with the guy you have to kill in a Dark Brotherhood quest) on top of the mountain. Sleep there, and fool around there for a bit.

There's no difference other than the PC version's hotkeys (numbers 1-8) and in the console versions you're limited to a lame D-pad hotkey system. You hit up and on diagonals to quickly equip things. It's still 8 hotkeys, but it seemed clunky to me.

I have no idea why Bethesda didn't give the PC more hotkeys all the way to the 0 key. Guess that's because they made if for the 360 first?

With mods you can expand the hotkeys. The one I downloaded even gives you equipment set ups where you can quickly change between all the gear you have equipped by pressing one of the arrow keys. For example, Up Arrow has your sneaking set up with a Mithril Cuirass that has Chameleon, and rings that fortifies the Sneak and Marksman skill. Or you can press Right Arrow which you might have setup more for combat, Glass Armor with rings that fortify the Strength attribute and Blade skill.

...are you starting to get the idea here? Mods in Oblivion are awesome, it's really the best modding community to date. You can really make it into your game.

Completed the game yesterday. Very good ending, though quite depressing.

I kept Baurus alive, one of my favourite characters in the game! Screw Jauffre, that old man died as soon as the Dremora burst into the White Gold Tower, but Baurus liiiiives!

The thing is, i'm bored with Oblivion now because i've completed the main quest. I know there's more stuff to do, but when I feel that i've completed the main quest in a game, I dont bother go back and catch the stuff that i've missed. It happened in GTA, it happened in every single Zelda ( except for speedruns of Minish Cap) and it's happened in Oblivion.

I might buy the PC version, purely to use mods.


What was dissapointing about Oblivion though was the scale. It's a massive game, but what's the point when cities have about 10 characters each? The battle for Bruma was pathetic, when Martin was walking through Bruma, there were about 6 people cheering and clapping. In the final quest, you have about 5 soldiers with you against about 10 Daedra at a time. This was not what I expected, I expected massive fights with hundreds of soldiers and thousands of Daedra, and I got 2 small gangs.

The arcane university probably had the highest amount of people in the entire game! The guilds were a let down with scale; the thieves guildhall is a joke.

I do like the game a lot; possibly the best game on 360, however I was expecting something on a larger scale.

Hopefully this will be fixed in TES5.

Does Oblivion feel natural on a console? It seems strange to use trigger buttons for a melee attack; at least, that's what I assume you're using.

Well it doesnt feel strange because that's what attack is in most games on 360. I dont think it would feel strange even to a newcomer though, because the chances are, if it's a FP game, RT will be attack.

The controls take getting used to, I imagine they'd be much smoother on the PC but they work on consoles. Jumping is a bit awkward, as it's at the top of the pag and you have to use your thumb to press it and it's all a bit weird at first, but once you've got the hang of it, it's easy as anything.

Yeah, it is weird. A is action, B is menu, X is sheath/equip weapon, and Y is jump. The buttons are set out weirdly, but everything else is fine.

Unfortunately, there's about 5 different voices in the game, which means you'd run into the same voices every 5 seconds. Sean Bean and Patrick Stewart make up for it though.

As yahtzee put it, " You'll frequently hear characters conversing with themselves, about how much they like to buy clothes in a shop owned by themselves"

But really, as Split said, it's not that difficult. With a character randomisation programme, just mixing the possibilities of different faces and races (lolrhyme) you can get millions of characters. The only problem is getting millions of voice actors to voice them all. Dialogue isnt a problem, because it can just alternate between different sets determined by disposition and race.

Well it would seem stupid that a city with 28 houses has 9 million people living there. This isnt GTA this is way better. each character actually has a life they all have stories scheduels houses, friends, family etc. Do what you want all of that will be gone and the only unique people will be quest related, it would totally kill the game.

And how is the market district not populated I mean during the day in most of the city there are at least 10 (Non guards) people walking about the main area just doing stuff thats not even including people in the other part of some cities and people inside thier houses.

No, Tom you are not allowed to say Argonian because Argonians are nang and you know it.

Favourite race; Argonian. Probably the most useful benefits to start with that become obsolete later on, but they look the coolest if you spend time customising your character ( like mine, red and black, slanted eyes, thing face with spines, yeah bwoi) and generally quite awesome.

Least favourite: Bosmer. Stupid little short ****s, they also have really gay haircuts which I find quite funny actually.

A mod I highly recommend is Mannimarco Revisited. It makes Echo Cave all around much better. It actually creates a chamber worth of him, gives him one hell of a makeover and adds some awesome clothes/ weapons. Awesome reaper scythe ftw.

Nah, i've solved the problem. The knights of the order use disintegrate armour spells, so it goes down a lot faster. With normal enemies like the tree things it goes down normally.

I just picked up Oblivion today, fought an Arena battle, checked my open quests, and logged off. I keep trying to do that stupid vampire quest in Burma(I think), but I don't know what to do. I go in, guy is dead, and they say unless I'm a guard, don't come back. Well that's helpfull.
