GDC is THE biggest annual game conference, right after E3. But since E3 no longer exists as it once did, it's taking on the role of some big game news.

However, GDC isn't known for having game demos. It's geared towards, as the name suggests, game developers themselves. For example, GDC 2005 was when Nintendo first unveiled the Wi-Fi Connection initiative. Last year, Nintendo revealed that the Wii (then called the Revolution) would be able to download Virtual Console games not just for NES, SNES, and N64, but also for third-parties (Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx 16).

But then again, GDC has also been known for some big game announcements - that same year, for example, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass was unveiled...

So yeah. Not as big as E3, but it's definitely an important gaming event.

No, not at all. I'm quite sure they're very angry about Sony suddenly overhauling their console design. This was exactly the reason why they were waiting for everyone else to finalize their consoles before revealing the Wii, but they couldn't wait any longer.
The problem is that Nintendo cannot do anything legally to prevent it. All they can do is make sure their version is better, and maintain superior marketing (this is where Nintendo falls short imo, especially down here in Australia. Nintendo Aus are completely useless)

Not yet. Infact, the games for the wii are crap atm. The only ones worth buying are
Twilight Princess and Wario Ware SM. Most of the games are just cheap, rubbish games that are either just there to show off the Wiimote, or ones that have wiimote capability added on.

If you dont have one yet, dont get one. Wait until the summer. That's my advice.

Another thing; if you love classic games and you dont want to wait until summer, there's some pretty awesome VC titles atm, like A Link To The Past, Super Mario World 2, Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country.

But I dont think VC is enough to sell the Wii on it's own, so wait for the ' Top 3' games to hit.

depends on your intrests. According to the latest Game Informer magazine that I recieved, the will be a Resident Evil game for the Wii (no release date listed), Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End (likely just before the movie hits theaters), a game called Nights: Journey of Dreams by Sega (a Fall release), there should also be a Harvest Moon game coming out this year.

I think to be interested in NiGHTS (Yes that's really how they type it) you would need to have played the old Sega Saturn version. Who knows though? Maybe it's not that neccessary.

Actually, as far as I know, ninty DID get a copyright on the D-pad. You see, sony's version consists of four seperate buttons, and microsoft's is a circle. They had to use those designs because ninty had already copyrighted the origional. Same for the L & R buttons. They're just slightly different designs, and thanks to the loopholes, that's enough to make them legal.

As for third party Wii games, you'll have Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Soul Calibur Legends, Resident Evil 4 remake and a new RE spinoff, The Godfather, Guilty Gear, Guitar Hero 2, Manhunt 2, Harvest Moon, NiGHTS, MySims and a few other Sims games, SSX, Sword of Legendia and others, so it's not like the Wii won't have any good their party games.

Oh, and there is also Super Paper Mario, which is supposed to be really good. GameRankings says it's the second best Wii game, after TP.

Some of those are questionable in my opinion. TP has the occasional moment but apart from that I think it's fine. I'd say Prime's opening is pretty creepy but once you get past that, it's not so bad.

"More challenging like Metal Gear?" Is Metal Gear really harder than Mario Sunshine? Is it really harder than Mario World? Those two games were very hard quite often, especially the latter.

I completely understand why somebody would say that Mario is kiddy, but I also totally understand Caael's point of view. Does it really matter whether or not a game is full of blood and creepy, scary rooms? If a game is fun, then it should be playable(and played) by everybody.

EDIT: Darn quick posters... If MK Wii is released here months before it's released anywhere else, it won't be complete, which is why I'm hoping they don't release it earlier.

That's exactly it. It's complicated to get past all the legal bindings, especially when the rights to certain franchises and game titles get shifted around as companies merge, are bought, become defunct, etc.

I also found something totally cool on the Wii the other day. You can actually change the order of the channels! Press A and B on any channel, and you can move it to another empty slot, however you wish - the one exception is the disc channel, which has to stay where it is.

Nope, you're quite right SoT. At the beginning of the Wii's life companies mostly went for the easy and cheap choice, mini-game titles. However, there will be quite a lot of RPG's soon enough, including(but not limited to) Fire Emblem 10, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Dragon Quest, Soul Calibur Legends and the new Tales of Symphonia.

The DS went through a similar experience in its first year on the market. This holiday season will mark the beginning of the actual "potential" for Wii, not limited to Nintendo's big franchises either.

Modding has nothing to do with cheating. Unless you're modding the controlers. When you mod a console, you allow it to do things that it normally wouldn't be able to do. For instance, you could buy a chip that would allow you to play DVD's on a Wii. Or other stuff. Very rarely is it used for cheating.

The 360000 can, and with an atatchment it can play HD DVD's, and the PS3 can play dvd's and blu-ray, but the wii can't play DVD's. Which is one reason why it's cheaper.

Nintendo figured that everyone pretty much has a DVD player of some kind nowadays, so they were all like, "who the **** needs two DVD players?" so they like, didn;t put one in the Wii. 'N stuff.

Pretty much T. Nosferatu you misunderstand. A typical Chip for the Wii is installed on the Wii's DVD drive, powering it, allowing it to run foreign games, play DVD's and backups for Wii/GC.

They raise a fair point though. Whenever I've had to make a decision about Modding a console or whatever it's always been hard. It took me about 10 hours of reading and Youtube to get all the facts for my Wii, and then a few days to get the balls to get it modded.
With the warranty though, it only lasts for a year anyway, I've only got like 2 months left in that warrranty, why do they care if it gets modded after that? They still get the sale for the console. Hell, most people I know with an Xbox bought it after they heard all the cool **** you can do with it.

The Wii isn't a person, it's an object that you possess, and we all live in the free world, so we have a right to do whatever we want with the crap that we own. So anyway, I'm too tired to read the article against modding the Wii (and probably hardware in general) but if it's anything like modding software, I don't see what's wrong. If you want to mod it, it's your choice, and I'll totally defend it. There's a good chance that what you're modding in should have been a feature to begin with. Though I'll wonder if you could potentially screw it up like that, such as not being able to read certain games or hook up to the internet. When you mod hardware (and even software) there's always chances of compatibility problems.

Gaming companies hate modding their products cuz most of tihe time people mod their system to get illegal copies of games.
Like example the PSP... the custom firmwares are popular because most people just download their games from torrents.
And the Wii... the software doesn't sell well in China cuz everyone is buying games for $2 there. Only playable on modded Wiis IIRC.

Xbox Live is a fantastic service for console gamers, PlayStation Network is below average right now but when Home is released and there's more downloadable content the service will be substantially cooler, then you have the Wii's online service with pain in the ass friend codes and no voice support. Voice support could be fixed but would Nintendo be willing to do such a thing when the emphasis on the Wii's online was safety?

Same goes for Wii codes, not only will it be an immense pain to remove all friend codes after the Wii's release it would also contradict their safety efforts. The next generation is very much about online gaming whether it be uploading your high score to the world or teabagging Nick1Presta on Halo 3 like I do every day. Yet it's worth keeping in mind that the Wii is an alternative console, commonly regarded as a console worth buying as your secondary choice rather than your primary gaming unit. So yes, you could use your PS3 or 360 for your traditional gaming needs while the Wii can serve as your breath of fresh air when you want something unconventional but enjoyable.

If I remember right, they never wanted to have other colors. But as far as I know the Wii caseing is either clear, with the paint on the inside (like iPods), in which case you can strip the paint from the inside and re-paint it obviously voiding warranty, or if it's just high gloss paint on the outside, take it apart and re-paint it with high gloss black paint.

Don't worry about voiding the warranty though. Everyone knows that Ninty's systems are built like tanks, no matter what they look like. Though I don't think that you'll want to do any of that anyway.

I'd like to have a black Wii too though, so if that's what it takes, I'd do it.

Pokemon D/P has voice chatting during battleing over wi-fi, but I don't know if that's supported for the Wii. But the Wii if it does have voice chat, won't even really need a headset like the 360 ans PS3 due to the controler's built in mic/speakerphone. Of course, a headset would be nicer.

Yet it's worth keeping in mind that the Wii is an alternative console, commonly regarded as a console worth buying as your secondary choice rather than your primary gaming unit. So yes, you could use your PS3 or 360 for your traditional gaming needs while the Wii can serve as your breath of fresh air when you want something unconventional but enjoyable.

Shame that Xbox Live cost's money, you have to play Halo with retards from all over the world (See I'm not discriminating) and you get banned if you Mod the Console so you don't have to pay over $100AUD for games...

Most of the real bidding occurs within the last 5 minutes, I've lost on a lot of items by putting my bid in with say 10 seconds left, then having lost at say 2 seconds. It happens. And yes people overcharge on postage all the time, although sometimes it may seem like they do but they're really not. I always seem to undercharge on postage, I was down $7 on one of my last items, charged $8 instead of $15.

Seriously once you pay that £40 for an entire twelve months, you'll feel as if you just got the service for free all that time. If Microsoft isn't bull****ting us, and is using some of that money to further enhance Xbox Live, then it's money well spent for me as I want to see the service continually improve.

Also, even though XBL costs a measly amount of money each year, PSN is still nothing special at all even though it's free, and what's even worse is the fact that PSN is pretty much imitating XBL in various ways. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, and we all know how good Sony is at imitating [Sixaxis].

The original Xbox sucked, but Xbox Live made it more than bearable. The Xbox 360 luckily doesn't suck, and Xbox Live makes it even more awesome. Sony have seen this success, and are trying to implement it into their new console while adding a couple of new elements and obviously stealing a couple of old ones. However I'm not sure if the Wii is going to try and do anything with their online service, I mean the Gamecube had online but the community was more than just dead, they were pretty much non-existent.

As far as I'm aware, PCs already have Xbox Live and it sucks. Xbox Live is an excellent feature in console gaming, but PC gamers weren't impressed at all since everything the service is offering has been available to them for some time. Features like having a friends list where you can see who's playing what is reminiscent of XFire, and PC gamers refuse to pay money for things like gamer pictures when they're usually treated to such things for free. Watch, one reason why you're probably getting beat in bids at the last second is because if someone else made a bid of say, $30, and the item's previous bid was 15, then the price will only show up as $16, and unless someone bids more than $30, that other person will get the bid. But if you bid after him, and only bid 25, the price will rise to $25, but the other guy will still get the bid.

And I always thought XBL Gold was a monthly fee. But $40 a year is only about $3.30 a month. That's a pretty good deal imo.
