I liked the planets that you could run around on, but at the same time I hated it because the camera would go top-down which SUCKS for a 3D platformer. Other than that it was pretty great, though probably over-praised.

I hope Super Mario Galaxy 2 ends up being terrible so I can make up my mind that I want to sell my Wii for some hopefully good cashage.

Mario 1 & 2 were the exact same game, with a large majority of backgrounds in 2 being from the original. 3 simply had a graphics overhaul. take 3, get rid of the raccoon suit and switch it with a wing(WOAH, so diverse), and you have SMW. But honestly, compare the Mario series to any other game series. They usually only change the setting and improve upon the previous game in a few ways, while the Mario series usually feels different every time you play it, heck even SMB3 and SMW felt vastly different compared to other games.

To be honest 360 and PS3 are both pretty awesome. Sure the PS3 has now got some exclusives that I wish I could play (Uncharted, LBP etc) but I'm still pretty chuffed with the 360 games I've got. Either option is good.

Looks like the same game to me. Mario is diverse when it switches to other genres. The rpg's are original, Mario Kart was good at first, but then they over saturate the market, and you don't give a shit. But once you come down to the core, 2D/3D platformers, they are very much the exact same game. You don't feel anything new when you pop in Super Mario World over 3, except word, green dinosaur ftw. When you pick up Yakuza 3, or FF13, they don't feel like their predesessors. Fuck, FF13 is the farthest from a true FF FF can get.

Oh right that SMB 2, was obviously talking about the other one. But regardless I am talking about the main series, the spin offs are a completely different matter, but still look at SMB - SMW2 each game at the very least felt fresh and different from the other ones, even if the changes between SMB3 and SMW are mostly aesthetic there is still enough so that it isn't "Super mario: 3, now with Yoshi".

No, the arguement isn't about just those two games

SMB 1 = SMB2 (it was the real second game, but they felt american gamers were too dumb, so you can't simply pretend it doesn't exist)
SMB3 = SMW
SMG = SMG2

And to an extent, SMG felt way to much like Mario 64 in space.

Go look at FF2, then look at FF13. They are entirely different games. Different feel, different gameplay (but on the core level it stayed the same), different everything. Look at MGS then MGS4. Entirely different games. Both are diverse series's that change (the key part of diverseness} over time. They are able to take risks. The only time the main Mario series has ever taken risks is Sunshine, and we all know how that turned out. They went right back to the stale formula with the next game. The only change in the main series are upgrades. It's exactly like L4D 2. Good game, not diverse in the slightest because all they added were weapons and 2 new zombie species'.

You could give SMB3 a graphics update and throw Yoshi in there and it would be SMW (even has a world map). You can't do that with FF2/13, plain and simple.

That's why I don't think mario is a diverse series

edit - and i did take a look at SMB-SMW2. The only game that takes a risk and dares to be different is SMW2. The rest are graphical updates of their predecessor.

Fair enough, but I believe a series can be diverse without having to constantly change the basics. Dont know much about FF considering I have only really played 2 but compare the Mario series to something like Fallout, GTA, Zelda etc to see where I am coming from.

XD No, seriously I agree with Tom and see what he's saying with Mario. Mario maybe is not as diverse as some series, but considering how long it's been around it manages to achieve a decent amount of diversity. If that makes sense.

Mario games take the same formula and they add a spin to it with different moves or different power ups that change the way you play each game. They aren't trying to be like Final Fantasy, which nobody knows why SE numbers them since they don't try be similar to each other. Why does everybody have a different favorite Final Fantasy game? Because they might as well be in their own separate series.

Meh, you don't need a PC for gaming. PC gaming is dead. The main focus of developers surround their console-gaming customers. Keeping that in mind, when it comes to a console you'll not want to risk a 360. For starters, as little as it is talked about these days, RROD is still a huge problem surrounding the 360. If you're not going to buy your SeXBox through a retail chain, you're next to boned if your machine red rings.

Secondly, Bayonetta is available for PS3 lol. The only games you'll be missing out on (by the sounds of it) are Mass Effect/2 and Left4Dead/2. Is this really such a big deal? I'm going to take the risk of making a further ass of myself here, but do you not want to just play these games to get closer to/understand someone you know? Why not just watch an LP to get the story line? I'm talking about Mass Effect, here, because we all know L4D has no storyline (eez just for online play =D)

Which brings me to XboxLive. lol, PSN and XBL are equal or VERY close in terms of performance and usability. Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure the key difference is price. XBL costs $50 a year whereas PSN is free. Call me a fanboy if yew want, but I was leaning towards an XBOX until I actually started shopping around and doing research. I'm like one of those douchey Mac guys. I'll shove my god damn bullshit down your throat until you give in!

I was in the same boat. Money wasn't an issue and I did my homework. So of course that homework led me to acknowledge that 360 was the better choice.
That list that WD posted? Killzone 2 (but I have Halo 3 so that equals out) and maybe Demons Souls and Yakuza 3, but I know nothing about them. So that's what, no games really that Ps3 has that I want. As opposed to Halo 3 (online) Mass Effect (which is a sensational game, very impressed by that)

Lost Odyssey

Not to mention all my mates have 360, and it has a bigger online userbase

Lost Odyssey is a very underrated game in my opinion. I can't make any real FF13 comparisons yet, but I can say I had more fun in the opening hours of Lost Odyssey than XIII.

Considering how little are exclusives these days (Wii aside) there's not much to split the consoles, a IRL friend was probably the biggest reason for me. Gears was good, enjoyed them but didn't get into online or anything. What's wrong with Halo? I get most of it's appeal it online.

LP = Let's Play. They're narrations of the player's experience playing a game. I even made one of the Sims 3 here for a while featuring characters based off of GSSF members, but got busy with school/stopped seeing the point as the forums became even less active. I hope to start it again someday, though.

Halo isn't BAD... it's just... not that good. Halo 1 was best and I still think it's great today, 2 and 3 just weren't as good especially when compared to other console shooters. Honestly, Killzone 2 is better, have you played it?

And for the record, no matter what you get, 360 or PS3, you're getting a good console. I think the PS3 is going to outlive the 360 though.

Halo was ok single player, but it's a 'get some mates round and screw around online and have some fun' game. Haven't played Killzone 2 but I played the first one.
Ps3 will probably outlive just cause of Blu-ray though.

Halo 3, despite the core gameplay which is nothing new to the genre, has some awesome features that more games need to start taking on board like forge and theater, which should both be used more in games and an actual custom games system, not just private matches like you get in most FPSs. Developers should take notes from Halo features.

Hacked my Wii about a week ago. pretty freaking awesome if I do say so myself.

Most of the homebrew apps could use some cleaning up, but WiiMC (media center), and VBA GX are both very well designed. VBA GX even moreso, though. I have to say, it's probably the slickest app I've used yet in terms of design. Integrates well into the Wii OS, snappy menus, nice features (can load rom's and saves from anywhere on your local network).

The only problem I have is that it boots into the Priiloader every time. And on occasion it boots up with out color. Everything's in black and white, but that's a pretty rare occurance and easily fixed with a reboot. Though with a little tinkering I think I can work the bugs out.

But more importantly, it only took the Wii hacking community a couple of weeks to work around nintendo's new countermeasures integrated into the 4.3 update. And even more impressive was how easy it was to execute the hack despite there being only a couple week's time between update and hack. Very impressive.


Anyway, go and hack your Wii's. There's a homebrew and opensource 3D graphics engine being developed for the Wii, so expect to see some interesting games being released exclusively via homebrew.

You'd be right in your pronunciation. Though I also agree with you in terms of Nintendo's crappy online offering. I think it stems from the fact that Nintendo considers itself "Family Friendly" above all else, whereas Microsoft and Sony put that thought on the back burner (to an extent).

Currently only have NFS:Pro Street (which sucks), LoZ:TP, SSBB, SMG, and FE:RD. I don't count Cock of Duty 3 because it's the worst game in history (for the Wii). I played it once, and never played it again. It's pretty good on the 360 though.

Agreed about RD. My absolute favourite game on the Wii, and one of the best I've ever played. Almost nothing beats it.

They're not really too much more difficult. They just require more conservative strategies; there's less room for carelessness.
