I'm not going to read the last 3 pages to find out if somebody has already said this, but a 1/1000 chance in a lifetime? It's about a 1/1000 chance per BATTLE. When you consider the hundreds of wild Pokemon you find yourself engaging, how else do you think you found three of 'em?

Yeah, it's a 1/1000 chance per or something similar to that. Most people will probably never encounter a shiny themselves, though.

However, it seems someones found another glitch/exploit in the game which allows you to get shinys more easily:

^Video with Instructions
Also, on the subject of helpful glitches, I don't know if its confirmed, but apparantley you can evolve your own pokemon that need to be traded to evolve (e.g Machamp, Alazakam, Golem etc), without actually trading with someone else, just by putting it up to trade on the GTS and then taking it back down again. The only problem is that someone could actually trade you for it in the 5 minutes its on the GTS, but if you request for something absurd (Lv. 100 Arseus?) then it shouldn't happen.

And do DS games freeze when you take out a gba game? That might have been it, because I was putting Zero Mission in and out when scrolling through the text, which it froze a lot on.

Y'know, I have too many extra Pokemon, I'll probably start handing a couple extras of mine to everyone here who wants them. =|

Kk, I'm gonna add you to mah Pal Pad. Here's what you do:
1. Enter Wi-Fi from the bottom floor of the Pokemon Center.
2. Connect to Wi-Fi.
3. You have two options when you enter: Invite and Disconnect. Press Invite, the trade. Press X if you want to turn Voice Chat on and off.
4. Wait for me to come on. I'll apply to your name on the screen, and we'll get into the trade room.
5. Choose the Pokemon you want to trade.
6. Trade.
7. Be happy. =D

Welcome! For those of you too lazy and/or unwilling to go to GameFAQs or search for another guide, this is the place to look at if you have questions about the basics of IVs and EVs!
Let's start with IVs!~
IVs, otherwise known as Individual Values, are points that are calculated from the moment a Pokemon is caught, given to you by an in-game character, or hatched from an egg. IVs are a working force behind the wellness of the growths in a Pokemon's stats.
The IVs range from 0 points to 31 points. If the IV of a stat is at 0, the stat will grow quite badly. If at 31, however, the stat will grow much better. To determine a Pokemon's IVs, you can use an IV Calculator from several different Pokemon sites. Here's the calculator from Serebii:
http://www.serebii.n...iv-calcdp.shtml
IVs can totally change how a Pokemon grows! Remember that!
Now, onto EVs!~
EVs, short for Effort Values, are points a Pokemon gains from fighting a Pokemon. Take a Bidoof for example, a Pokemon that gives 1 HP Point for every time you knock it out. Every 4 EVs, let's say in Attack, will raise the Attack stat by 1 point. therefore, 4 EVs = 1 more point in a stat. The biggest amount of EVs a Pokemon may have in a stat is 255. That means a whopping 63 additional points in one stat! However, the greatest amount of EVs a Pokemon can have overall is 510. That means you can only fully train two stats, so choose carefully!
Also, do you remember the vitamins like Protein and Calcium? One dosage gives 10 EVs to their respective stat (Protein in Attack, etc.). A Pokemon can only consume 10 of each vitamin, though, so you must train for the rest of the 155 EVs yourself! The vitamins are as follows:
HP Up - HP
Protein - ATK
Iron - DEF
Calcium - SP ATK
Zinc - SP DEF
Carbos - SPD
There are also certain berries that deplete 10 EVs from a stat! These can be used for taking a mis-EV-trained Pokemon and fixing it for the better! The berries that lower the stats are:
Pomeg - HP
Kelpsy - ATK
Qualot - DEF
Hondew - SP ATK
Grepa - SP DEF
Tamato - SPD
To conclude this presentation, just note that IV/EV training is pretty much necessary for competitive battling, since virtually everyone online WILL use awesome IV Pokemon that were EV-trained to hell and back, and with the right nature as well. If in-game, this isn't necessary, since the in-game Trainers don't EV-train.
So, before you go into competitive battling...remember these tips. Thank you, readers, have a nice day.

gsninja, couple of things about the trading: 1, are all the pokemon legit (not hacked?) and 2, is it possible to trade over the internet for non sinnoh dex pokemon before getting the national dex? cos if so I would really really like that Torchic you're offering. :P
EDIT: Added a card to my sig to show my progress. It shows my current team, their levels (behind their pictures, not very clear I know, I'll move em somewhere else on version 2), Their names underneath the pictures (Yeah I give em weird names. The first number is the species (so Geodude is the 3rd species of pokemon I caught), and the second number is the pokemon of that species (so the geodudes I'm using are the 6th and 7th geodudes I caught - I was after a specific natures) Yeah it sounds stupid but (for me) just makes it easier to select the ones I want in the PC.
Be awesome if you could rename your torchic to one that fits in with my style if you're gonna trade it to me gs ;)

For the same reason I have two Machops. Their different skills and natures can be used to cover diferent situations. I have one machop that won't ever miss, and has the right moves to land a lot of criticals. Combine that with a nature that increases the attack by a lot, and you have a heavy hitter that'll never miss. My other has a nature that gives average attack, but a lot of defense. I don't use him often, so I don't remember what its skill is.
And I think I'll try beating EV trainers before I start EV training to see if it's really worth it. :P

Yes, but you lose type coverage. It would be better to have another Pokemon that is similar to Machop that has an Adamant nature and good typing (and good type coverage). Two pokemon that are the same are easy to sweep with ONE counter versus two pokemon that may need TWO counters.

Also, as me and my brother started at the same time, we've decided to treat each other a bit like a '2nd rival', and battling each other each day.
I won the first match in Eterna city ;)
My team was:
Geodude lvl 20
Geodude lvl 20
Monferno lvl 20
and he had:
Meditite lvl 13
Onix lvl 20
Grotle lvl 23
It was a pretty hard match but I managed to win in the end. Hope I can do so again today. I'm gonna add another pokemon to my team, probably a Mothim.

Thats a bit overkill ;)
Hmmm. Mothim or steel-type Wormadam?
#458
Posted 24 June 2007 - 04:55 AM
They're evolutions of Burmy, which you can get from spreading honey on trees. Mothim evolves from a male burmy, Wormadam evolves from a female, and you can change wormadan's type by battling burmy in different places before it evolves (forest --> grass type wormadam, mountains --> ground type wormadam, city --> steel type wormadam)
I've decided to go search for a fossil in the underground instead. Does anyone know how long it takes the guy to ressurect the pokemon? is it 12 hours or a step out of building/step in to building?

Suppose someone wouldn't trade me a spare one? Shield fossil preferably but I'll take a skull one if not
It would be reeeaaaaaaaalllly helpful of you *puppy eyes*
Anyway, current team:
Geodude lvl 23
Geodude lvl 23
Monferno lvl 22
Drifloon lvl 22
Mothim lvl 20
I know Drifloon are only meant to be catchable on fridays, but I changed my DS' calendar so I could get one today ;)
Gosh I'm bad.
They come wild at lvl 22 as well which is pretty good.
Also trained that burmy up to level 20 so it evolved into Mothim. Probably won't keep him on the team though.

Assuming fossils aren't key items are they?
Anyway it'd be more helpful to me if you could ressurect it first (and name it, it'd be awesome if I could choose the name as well), because if you trade me the pokemon instead of the fossil then it'll have your trainer ID and so will get extra EXP when I level it up
Lemme know if you wanna go through, would be a big help ;)
Not sure what I could offer you in return, as I've not got any good items or powerful things really. I caught an Aipom from a honey tree today though, you could have that if you want, they're pretty rare, and its evolution isn't that bad either.

lvl 39 Empoleon
lvl 38 Luxray
lvl 37 Machoke
lvl 35 Staraptor
lvl 38 Ponyta (what level does it evolve at?)
lvl 32 Lucario
Best stats:
Empoleon: 94 Def. 112 Sp. Atk. 90 Sp. Def.
Luxray: 108 Atk. 91 Sp. Atk.
Machoke: 101 Atk.
Staraptor: 103 Atk. 83 Speed
Ponyta: 82 Atk. 86 Speed
Lucario: 77 Atk. 73 Speed
Luxray and Machoke are my main attackers, Staraptor is my secondary because of it's speed and attack (Lucario will join in that position whe it's caught up) and I only use Ponyta when the types I'm going against call for fire since it's stats kinda suck. But it's the only fire type I have so...

But really, I need the pokemon name, what you want it to be called, it's stats, moves and level. Everything else is not needed if you don't want it.
Just pm/email me, or email to say you added msn, I don't go on it much, and give me the details and friend code etc.

All of that information looks correct. Actually, if the level of capture's really low, it doesn't always mean the Pokemon is hacked. I mean, it says it came at level 4 from Route 204; if you use the Poke Radar in the grass on that route, you can find a Ralts at level 4, so yeah.

Actually now that I think about it, there isn't a heck of a lot variation in D/P to begin with. It's all grass and bug Pokemon, basically.

Basically, in LG, on the islands, you could find some new johto pokemon in the grass, as well as some you've already seen. However, the new pokemon appeared in the grass at low levels (e.g 7, 10 etc), but old pokemon such as pidgey appeared along side them at ridiculous levels such as 40 or 50 (because you've beaten the elite 4 and your pokemon are expected to be of a high level), so one minute you would be walking in the grass and fight a level 7 Sentret, the next minute it could be a level 50 pidgey, which I found very implausible.

EDIT 2:
The female combee has *horrible* stats, and a sucky nature. :/
hmm. But Vespiquen has such a cool Movepool :/

Also, Wifle, your starter is at a lower level than I thought it would be at that point. O.o I think you should evolve it at latest right after the fourth Gym Leader. It's evolved form is VERY handy, especially in the battles later on.
I won another PP Up. =D

However I have found an awesome relplacement: Spiritomb :agitated:
Heres the current team:
Monferno Lv. 23
Golem Lv. 25
Golem Lv. 25
Drifblim Lv. 28
Cranidos Lv. 27
Spiritomb Lv. 25
I fought my brother again today, and he totally wiped the floor with me. I can't remember his exact levels but he only needed 2 pokemon to own my whole team:
Gyarados Lv. 31
Torterra Lv. 32
I really need to get something to beat that Gyarados. However it took out both Golems and Cranidos with Brine (WTF Is up with that move, how can brine hurt people so much?) and Drifblim with Bite.

If the foe's HP is down about half, this attack will hit with double the power.
The problem seems to be that you have two pokemon which are both Rock and Ground. You need an electric type or a grass type in that team. Probably grass would be your best bet; Golem can take out flying-types with rock moves.

I don't like how they keep adding extra types to the starter's 3rd forms. Torterra is part ground so it has an advantage with Earthquake over Infernape (which is part fighting), and because it's part Fighting it has an advantage over Empoleon who is part steel.
Thats why his Torterra beat my Monferno, with earthquake.
I preffered it when the starters final forms were just Grass/Fire/Water, or at least if they had any additional types it didn't change round the basic Rock/Paper/scissors (E/g Venusaur was part Poison but it didn't give it an advantage over Charizard)
In other news, I'm gonna scrap Monferno and possibly one of the Golems from my team. I know GSninja keeps going on about how good Infernape is, but my Monferno is pretty meh, and judging by the types of pokemon the Elite 4 use it won't be that helpful their either.
Spiritomb is awesome, and so is Drifblim though (Drifblim has a ton of HP)

My brother is pretty mint for stuff like that. He just let me do it whilst he was watching TV so I just sat down with both DS's and kept re-entering the underground.
I managed to do a bit of training today on the train back from Liverpool (Went to the Uni open day), and got a female combee which I bred :) So I'm gonna train that up. I put the **** combee in the daycare with my Mothim and they've both grown to Lv 34 so I'm going to use the Mothim against my brother.
Not the level 34 Vespiquen though because it's stats sucj and because it didn't evolve till level 33 it doesn't have any good moves (Gust, Sweet Scent, captivate)
Mothim learned some good ones though, Including poisonpowder, Confusion and Psybeam
Can't wait to start training up this new bred combee -> Vespiquen. It doesn't have the uber stats I was looking for, and it has a pretty rubbish defense stat which is a shame (considering thats meant to be one of the best), but it has a good Special defense to make up for it.

@WD, that's how it was for my Piplup. When it evolved the first time, it started to get good stats, and then when it finally evolved into Empoleon, it started to get REALLY good stats. It's good for all around defense (Sp. and normal is high), and it has great Sp. Attack.

Yeah, Infernape's only super-effective against a small amount of the Elite 4. Still, my Infernape destroyed over half the Elite 4. Then again, it's all up to personal preference. Use what you think will beat a Trainer. =D
And yes, Drifblim does have a ton of HP. I never bothered to evolve my Drifloon, though. XP

The offensive Advantage of Empoleon over Swampert, is that Empoleon can do up to 3X damage to fire, ground, and Ice, and can do 3X damage to rock two times over (water and steel attacks are super effective), while Swampert does only 3/4 damage to water, bug, and dragon, and both of it's types do 3/4 damage to Grass. On the other hand, Swampert can do up to 3X damage to ground, electic, poison, and steel, and 3X damage two times over to both Fire and Rock, while Empoleon does only 3/4 times damage to electric, grass, dragon, and steel, and both types do only 3/4 damage to water.
If there was an attack that was affiliated with all types, and you used it on Empoleon and Swampert, Empoleon would take an average of 3/4096 (.000732421875) times normal damage, but since it is only affected by 16/17 types (no damage from poison attacks), it takes an average of 3/4352 times normal damage instead. Swampert would take an average of 1/4 (.25) times normal damage, but because it is only affected by 16/17 types (no damage from electric attacks), then it is brought down to 16/68ths (just use a calculator for the decimal, preferably Windows' calculator) times normal damage . This is all because the Steel type has great defense against a very wide range of types, and the ground type has great defense against only two.
Judging by that, Empoleon is a much better defensive player when it's personality and types give it more Defense (steel type) and Sp. Defense (personality).
If there were a pokemon affilliated with all types, and Empoleon and Swampert attacked with an attack that dealt damage affiliated with both of their types, then Empoleon would deal an average of 177147/4096 (do it on the calculator for the decimal) times normal damage, while Swampert would deal 177147/1024 (use calculator for decimal), nearly 4 times as much damage as Empoleon.
Judging by that, Swapert is a much better attacker when given the right personality.
Over all, Swampert is your big guns while Empoleon is your iron defense. It just depends on what kind of strategy you prefer. But all of this doesn't include the moves that they learn either, or their base growth stats (before personality).
[EDIT] And I found out all of this with the help of Pokemon Colleseum's "Pokemon Combat Chart" Windows' calculator, and my won brain.
...
And some paper and pencil.

However, Swampert's base 100 HP is better than Empoleon's 84 and 12 HP goes longer than 2 extra defense points.
I do agree that Empoleon is a better special sponge but you really shouldn't be using either with their average/slightly above average special defense and while you can switch in Empoleon to take a Toxic/Sludge Bomb, the electric immunity is awesome, especially when you can EQ it back for massive damage. Swampert gets STAB EQ, Stone Edge, and as usually, Protect, Rest and Sleep Talk (Empoleon gets Protect, Rest and ST too).
Empoleon gets Grass Knot, Aerial Ace and a couple Steel Attacks (Steel Wing is the only decent steel attack Empoleon can learn).
If I had to take one as a tank, I would choose Empoleon but with much better alternatives most of the time, I still prefer Swampert.
Great analysis.

Anyways, I dunno where to train. Diamond doesn't have clumps of trainers to use the Vs. Seeker on like in FireRed/LeafGreen, or the Pokenav like in R/S which conveniently tells you who wants to battle and where.

Since your Roselia is way underleveled at this point, another suggestion might be that you give exp. share to another pokemon, and lead with Roselia while surfing around sea routes. Then switch the Exp. SHare when the holder levels up. All the encounters will be water pokemon so Roselia will always have the type advantage to smash through them like a Chuck Norris Round-House through a cracker. Maybe even Vs. seeker some swimmers. You'll still have the advantage and your step counter rises quite quickly while you're surfing for fast charges.
If you get bored with that, try the cops outside the Mansion after dark, most of them are up for getting their asses handed to them over and over.

Basically, Water/Ground has a 4X weakness and is immune to electric, but Dragon/Steel has two 2X weaknesses, is immune to poison, and then on top of that is resistant to 12/17 types.
I should make a guide on gameFAQ's. :(
