yeah i agree. I also tend to disable ray guns and mini mushrooms and metal boxes and stuff. And bunny hoods...i hate items that alter "you" and thus force you to suddenly start doing everything differently.

Hey, if you want a real test of SSBM skill, do what I do; no items, Final Destination stage. Straightforward enough battle; it should play like an ordinary fighting game. Not that I HAVE any skill in SSBM (I don't do the whole "3 A.I. opponents at level 9 difficulty" :P).

and yeah i agree, that is he best setting for testing skill. But then to be totally fair, you would have to use the same character wouldnt you? Characters like Pichu are built for items, so in some ways, getting a fair match based on skill is much harder.

Speaking of the audience, Forte, why is that they sometimes cheer for the wrong character? I mean, are they (or whoever) basing it on who is winning (in terms of KO's, etc.), or something else entirely? I've had many instances where I am wiping out my opponents, and the audience starts rooting for one of them.

Which reminds me of the time the audience started to cheer for my friend's character just as I KO'd him; that shut them up :P

On another topic, one of my favourite moves involves Kirby... a character is on the edge of a stage, Kirby floats down, swallows the character in, and sinks all the way down; an excellent finishing move :P

the audience cheers if you smack someone when you've over 100% damage. You will never get cheered when you're below that damage. As for wiping people out and them getting cheered...perhaps it also depends on survivability?

Kirby is awesome for Sacrificial KOs. And, adding to your Ganondorf + Bunny Hood comment, GL, have you noticed that withe the Bunny Hood, Ganondorf gets an additional punch with his normal A button attack? It's kinda' pointless, though, seeing as it causes no damage.

the bunny hood or something...its insane when you have Giant melees with bunny hoods and unbrellas. You can jump higher than normal anyways cos you're giant, the bunny hood should carry you way off the top of the screen, and the up and B followed by slowly falling to earth can have you off the top of the screen for ages!

Use Yoshi or Pichu. Use yoshi's down and A move to repeatedly damage the sandbag or use Pichu's thunder about three times. Once you hit it you should get at least over 1000 feet.

And Roy can tend to be clunky at times, and he isn't even very effective unless at close range, whereas Marth excels in both distance (not LONG distance, of course), and close quarters.

I think the Mario characters are all too overrated. Especially Mario himself. He's well balanced, but not particularly strong. Whereas more uncommon and unknown characters like Marth or Roy seem to have more distinct abilities.

I'm detecting a pattern; the more well known the character, the weaker it is.

Do event 27 or 29 I think. It's the one where pichu is in it. YOu have to use pokeballs to kill him I think.

Marth sword works way better then Roy's. The usually don't want to get to close to my opponent so the way Marth's blade works is that the tip of his blade does the most damage. Though I like Link because or the weapons he can throw which can bother a close range melee fighter.

Link is Slow, but he's really really good once you've learned how to use all of his weapons.

The fastest charecters in the game, I would have to say are Falco ( My favorite StarFox charecter) and Fox(even faster than Falco). Fox is faster than Falco, but Falco is way more powerful. :D

Nah, Ganondorf has to be the most devastating. His down and "B" move is fast and can send you flying also his over and "B" move is also quick and powerful. Also with him being so heavy he can't be sent flying right away.

you're right with that FGX - plus Sheik has both long range and close up moves. She seems to flail a little bit but, once you get over that, shes awesome. Plus she does breakdancing! It's her "aerial forewards sideways and A" that gets me - very powerful claw swipe.

Rarely... I usually make sure that there's a Bellossom nearby first... :D

And I think Ganondorf is far more useful in one-on-one than in Multiplayer Melees.

I wish I could face you. I would show you that even against good player like you that move is effective. Maybe if we faced one-against-one I may never hit you but in a 4 player melee battle were you have no time to watch me sneak up behind you I could hit yay. Thats the right time to use that move.

We could play in the Final Destination stage. Thats the best stage of them all for one-one-one battles. Anyways besides the Link crew what about Samus. Her meteor smash is so easy to pull of and she almosts floats when she is in the air. I admit she is slow but she has to be the best character when it comes to long range battles.

Samus reminds me a lot of Link. Considering her grapple beam works in the same fashion as his hook, and also with the multiple ranged weapons. I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I think by rapidly pressing the Z button while releasing the grapple beam, it goes a MUCH farther length. I've onyly been able to do it a few times, but it was a nice little' secret.

IMO, dodging is very useful for evading Bowser's B+Down move. That move does 21% damage, but is easy to dodge and immediately counterattack.

I overuse dodges. The only one's I'm lousy at are midair dodges and side dodges; I've got the rolling ones down, though.

I think midair dodges can act as a decent 3rd jump, too, especially for a character like Yoshi, who doesn't have one.

Yoshi was my fav on the original SSB, but he really sucks in SSBM for some reason. Maybe it's cause I hardly ever use him with all these cool new chars ^_^.

Wall jumping on the city stage (forget the name) and corneria are cool looking ways to get on the better side of your oponant and get in a backwards kick with Zelda or Samus :P.
You get more height over them, and you run away form them first so you don't get caught in a combo of punches, kicks and stabs :wub:.

When you shot a giant ball of energy from the super scooper if you are Ness you can bat it right back at the person by using the Ness's smash attack(over and A).

It was pretty neat and I never knew you could do that. It's like hitting a giant baseball.

I've known about the Ness thing for ages. You could do that on the original SSB too :P.
I like how some character's smashes do different things. Link's double smash attack is really usefull on low percentage people.

This is why i love SSBM. It's so simple, yet there are so many little things in it that make it so amazing.

Imagine - a bobomb wandering along the ground towards you and an opponent...you both see it and start trying to get out of the way. You both jump, but you reflect your opponent down towards the bomb and...well the rest is obvious^^

Mario has the best counter move. He can also turn things around so suppose your friend is Fox and he tries to get back on the stage by using his fire move. Just turn him around and watch him fall to his doom. My friends always kill me when I do that to them. It's cause they suck.^^

I find Mario's cape very effective. Like I said before it's the best counter move in the game. Your friends is charging at you and just before he attacks you,you just turn him around, grab him, and toss him away. Though once he does that move he leaves himself open to attacks so I usually slow down just before my friends turn me around then attack with Fox's over and B.

Mario's cape is also a decent recovery move. I mean, say that you're high in the air, and using a normal Super Jump Punch just won't get you close enough; you can flip the cape a few times to cover a little horizontal distance, and then return to the stage with the SJP.

Er...maybe you'd better try it for yourself; since my explanation probably isn't all that clear.

Crystal clear, Forte. I often use a similar maneuver with Marth/Roy, using their B + Side Dancing Blade combos.

I tend to use that technique, too. It gives that extra little boost towards the stage just until you use the Dolphin Slash. Characters like Capt. Falcon and Ganondorf, though...they're a little more risky; the Raptor Boost and Gerudo Dragon are good for moving horizontally, but they still don't get much distance, and they can't move afterwords. :(

Ness's homerun bat can hit any ENERGY BALL thrown at you. I told you guys before that you could hit the super scooper energy ball back at your opponent but it works for any energy ball.

i do that too^^

but dont you find that sometimes you might press the B button again too quickly and he'll go into the full combo instead of starting with the first one (desirable for getting back). The result usually meaning that you'll start falling to your death whilst combo-ing

Does anyone actually bother to use Marth's variety of combos? I mean you know the easy one whereby you just hit sideways and B a few times - but do you do the various combos within that to make him to the "crouch and poke frantically" thing?

Okay playing kirbys stage, we were kirby and we were vsing to kribies, and thats when it happend. THey suddenly both started kicking us at the same time together, we were on top of eachother so we were double teamed, we couldnt move and they got our percentage to 999% then right on the last kick well im sure u can guess what happened!

Speaking of Jigglypuff, how DO you use its infamous "resting 'n blasting" technique? You use B and Down, but I simply cannot seem to time it... does it work in midair as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it does work in mid air too. Best way to practice is to use someone large like Bowser as your opponent. The bigger their surface area, the more likely you are to pull it off. You have to be pretty much right on top of them.

You have to be in contact with your opponent, and you must be facing them. I only recomend using it in 1on1 matches, otherwise your just a sitting duck after.

the Action Replay does some amusing things in melee - bouncy items for example!

All the items appear and bounce, the characters get warped and stuff so that links hat can obscure most of the screen. If you pause and change the angle then the game crashes.

I played SSBM today and I figured out that I am pretty good with Falco... I fought Ness LVL 9 with 5 lives on Final Destination and I never died once. With Mario I died twice... Or maytbe Falco is good agains Ness... That make me think... What are Ness' weaknesses?

Ness is one of the simpler level 9 characters...

Ness has many weaknesses...
For one, it has a huge vurnerabilty when using his "B" moves...
It takes time to pull off...

for anyone who doesn't know, Ness's smash attack can hit back any projectile. This includes:
samus's charge beam
super scope shots
laser gun shots
mario/luigi's fireballs
not sure about pills
pikachu's electricity
i'm pretty sure ice climber ice
ness's pk thunder/fire
fox/falco's lasers
turtle shells
etc

I tried playing as him today, too small for my liking, his atacks don't have enough reach.
And i've lost my pk thunder skills ^_^

Mewtwo is decent because he can really mess up your opponets. Take his Disable for example; use that, and then toss a fully charged Shadow Ball, and get an instant K.O.

Ice climbers are rubbish. If one dies, either you lose a ife or you turn comletly useless. Which is really annoying on levels like ice mountain or rainbow ride where you have to jump along to stay alive

Are you crazy?!?! My sister plays with Ice climbers all the time and when they both do the same quick smash attack on you, it does at least 20% damage on you. They aren't that quick but lets say my sis dives at me to try and grab me but she misses the other Ice climber come and grabs me instead. Same goes for when there attacking. Best way to beat them is to separate them or get rid of the computer controlled Ice climber.

The Ice Climbers are darn annoying when they hit you with thier both smashes... I just always throw 1 away at the adge and keep it away from the other one. :lol:

Yes they are, but I use them like I do with MG&W, they stink but they are fun to use.

Funny technique with Samus(on the MM arena): Your opponent should be standing on one of the two floating platform. You should be on the other one. Now, fire a missile. Hopefully, your opponent will jump. Then, you will also jump and fire a..... Pfeh, forgot what it is called. A fully charged ball. It works for me. Or maybe my opponents are just stupid.

I was just curious... which characters are capable of Meteor Smashes? I know for certain Ganandorf and Samus... I believe Falco/Fox's Down + A technique while in midair could perhaps be one too....

Marth is so i assume Roy can too. Young Link CAN but it doesnt always send people down. There are a few characters who have that drill kick thing which can be used. Mewtwo and Ness can do it. I think Sheik has a weaker version that still counts...same for Game and Watch. Its been a while since i played it though.

Mario and Yoshi's midair across-a are meteor smashs. Very effective too.
Mario is really powerful. He has the best reflect, best meteor smash(you don't have to above them, next to them is fine), irritating firballs, nice jumping, ugh. :P

Mario is always the "all rounder" in these games. It might be nice to see games (like double dash and melee) where he's actually a technique character or a power character rather then the short-fat-and-bringing-up-the-rear character.

Yes, Roy and Marth really lack any way of defending against long range projectiles (save counter) - They can really be held back by a strong barrage of thrown or fired items.

If they themselves had projectiles i think they would be far and away the best characters.

Jus dodge them and move quickly. Even slow characters (Ganondorf) can move through using purely power against a barrage of items.

Today I killed my friend who was playing Ness on a damn shameful way! We fought in Onett and I (playing Donkey Kong) did Ness some good damage. Then my friend got mad and used PK Fire the whole time! :( I could escape after some 2 KOs and ran to the tree. Ness caged me and I jumoed to the Drugstore and made Ness fall below me wit a Meteor Smash. On the same moment a taxi came and BOOOOM! Bye Ness! B)

I love using indirect KO tactics myself. Since Roy's throw is worse than doggy doo, I never use it. BUT... if I have a motion sensor bomb set up somewhere, I'll just grab my opponent and throw them into it... KA-BOOM!

Same goes for any stage hazard.

I find that Fox's smash attacks are pretty darn quick. His moves flow so easily. He runs at you and attacks you then right after his attack I use his up and A smash move and you have a good combo right there.

yeah, using that a couple of times in a row and then doing his jump up and A (and connecting fully) is quite a devastating combo. His up and A move is probably my favourite nonspecial attack in his arsenal.
