Played around with Dwarf Fortress since DS has mentioned it at least twice on these forums, making me curious about it. Steep learning curve (still haven't figured out everything to do in the game) yet oddly addicting. I've already played around with it for more hours than I should have despite having more important things to do.

The game has a great concept, but my god does it need to be streamlined. The creator of the game also must have some kind of personality disorder, as he's added everything you could possibly think of to make it as accurate of a fantasy simulator as possible. Water pressure, temperature, gravity, as well as tissue simulation are all in. Actually, I'm not sure if that last one is in the game or if it's in an unfinished update, but I read about it. Tissue is simulated so that it can be damaged in various way for various effects (a smashed rib can be lodged in to liver tissue, ripping it). Also, dwarves can lose their eyelashes, which will cause their eyes to get dirty and brings about the need to manually clean their eyes.

You're also literally managing every aspect of dwarven life. You need farms, lodging (which you need to build furniture for) create tools, make clothes, build defenses against theives and goblins, an efficient water source, a dining hall/meeting place for dwarves to socialize, and more. All those things need resources of their own.

The ASCII "graphics" are a mixed bag. On one hand, it leaves a lot for you to imagine yourself, which is nice if you're into that sort of thing (I am.) On the other hand, it's extremely limiting and just adds to the learning curve since you have to figure out and remember what each little symbol means. I realize dwarf fortress gets it's inspiration from the roguelike games of old, but there's a reason games aren't designed this way anymore. The game overall would benefit with some actual graphics (doesn't need to be fancy) and definitely from a more modern presentation. At least an interface that supported the mouse would be nice. Don't get me started on the menu organization.

I did have fun with it, but when the game asks you to manage so many things with such an antiquated interface, I just gave up. I'll probably end up tackling it again some day when I have more time, but at the moment, I've got more playable games to spend time with.

Been playing GoW3 and 3D Dot Game Heroes, with spurts of CoD4, Unreal Tournament 3, and Dead Or Alive 4 for some multiplexer fun. Bout 5 hours into GoW. Just beat Hermes and got his feet which allow for quick dodging in the air, as well as running up certain walls. Those, and the other accessories you get (so far Helios' head which you can use to stun enemies and light up secrets, and some dude;'s bow & arrow which is just a badass way to finish someone off. Stealing Hades' sickle weapons is also pretty fucking key.. now i barely use the Athena's Blades. 3D Dot Game Heroes is pretty sick too. I've only beaten the first dungeon, and so far it was fairly simple, but the game is already pretty difficult, quick to punish you should you fuck up around a boatload of enemies. Every other aspect of the game is fucking great though, and I'm already enjoying it more than the original Zelda. It's gonna have to take some leaps if it wants to be better than Oracle Of Ages or LTTP.

Ya 3D Dot Game Heroes dungeons have been easy so far, but they mob enemies on you. If you get hit once you'll be pretty much screwed at times. It's really good though.

I'm a bit further into Alan Wake. As good as it is, a couple of things annoy me. It does that old trick of giving the player barely enough ammunition but takes it to the extreme. I entered a fight against four enemies with two pistol bullets and one shotgun shell. Dodging attacks is pretty weak to, sometimes he ends up moving into the attack.

Made the mistake of buying Sid Meier's Pirates! for ten bucks. It's just so terribly... addicting and fun. It eats away time even more than a game like Fallout 3 or Oblivion and I seriously need to get some schoolwork done. Really. Badly.

High points: coming across the pirate that betrayed my family but losing to him, tracking him down a few years later when I have better fencing skills/equipment then defeating him.

Also marrying the English governor's daughter who has huge breastesses.

I know this is a 5 year old remake of an 80s game, but I'd really like to see another remake or a sequel of this with a bit more variety. As fun as this is it's a bit repetitive in some ways.

Well that changed.

So RDR. First off I'll just say that I think the game will have a patch pretty soon, I already came across one glitch and another thing that's just kind of a quirk:

I saw a guy trying to walk through a wall (inside, no less) and a guy who was walking and occasionally running in place on a dirt road.

The other thing is, the lighting behaves strangely when skinning an animal at night. When I skin an animal the camera pans up towards the sky to look at Marston, then when he's done the camera goes back to looking at his back. Since RDR uses HDR lighting, that means the camera's virtual iris becomes large while looking toward the dark sky, but that means there's a weird flicker effect to switch back when it has to become small again when looking toward the ground that's illuminated by the moon. It's just kind of weird, you'd have to see it for yourself.

Those are just nitpicks, but I hope those are the only things that lack polish. So far it's great though, feels sort of like a GTA meets Oblivion due to the way it mimics GTA's set-up for interaction with the world, and Oblivion's free roaming.

My experience with sports games is pretty limited, generally only to the football ones like FIFA, but they always seem to be of a high quality. The only problem, like WD said, is the year on year releases. Generally they aren't necessary. I tend to get a new football game every two years or so. Last one was FIFA 09, so I'll probably go for FIFA 11 next.

Wow. Just wow. Sonic Unleashed is probably the worst Sonic game I've ever played. The Werehog stages are so poor and tedious. I got to one part where I kept having to repeat the same puzzle because he kept dying from this ridiculous room full of robots. I knew the game wasn't meant to be great but damn. At least Shadow the Hedgehog felt like a Sonic game in terms of the actual gameplay but this is way worse.

If you had played FIFA 10, the new MLB or NHL 10 you'd know this year's sports games are really good. The biggest problem with the sports genre is that you pay $60 every year for a minor upgrade - but that's different this year. I haven't played FIFA 09 or MLB 09, but I know NBA 10 and NHL 10 are way better than their 2009 counterparts. FIFA 10 is really enjoyable, too, and I'm not even a major football fan.

So Alan Wake's generally been about creepy goings on in the woods in the middle of the night. However there's one moment near the end of chapter 4 that's so incredibly out of character with the rest of the game it's both incredibly stupid yet incredibly awesome at the same time.

It was spoiled for me, too. I think, in passing, knowing what was going to happen made the last missions very bittersweet and twice as enjoyable. I was pissed when I first found out, though, only being through half the game and all.

I beat RDR two nights ago, and the early morning after, when I went on GFAQs, a thread with the ending explicitly stated in the title appeared and stayed at the top of the page for a while.

But as long as it's not explicitly detailed, I don't think it's too bad. I'd probably be distressed if I knew anything about the ending before I got to it too, but there's nothing like experiencing it yourself.

Also, now that I beat RDR, I have no motivation to do anything else with it, since the story was the only part that actually engaged me. Multiplayer was much less enjoyable that I hoped. Now I don't really know what game to stick with, I'm in a gaming slump because nothing I have atm is drawing me in anymore.

So after putting off Ninja Gaiden II for almost two years, I finally got the motivation to beat it about a month ago. One 10 hour playthrough over the course of two years. Fuck yeah. Still can't believe I refrained from playing it for so long, it's a brilliant game.

Bioshock 2 multiplayer, which actualy works, suprisingly. There's some very cheap tactics around (electrobolt and elephant gun? come on) but usually they're quite easy to counter and the geyser traps are hilarious if you can place them right. Can launch people into the air with one on the floor, back down with a ceiling one and then over a railing with an angled one. Brilliant.

Also a bit of FFXIII here and there but I dont want to play too much more of it until exams are over.

I've got a friend who got that GBA emulator to work on his iPod Touch too. The screen is absolutely gorgeous and makes the games come to life in a way that the actual GBA system couldn't. Great stuff.

I like it being relatively barren and isolated though; really gives you a chance to appreciate the game world and it means that keeping up with the characters is much more engaging than in GTAIV where towards the end I didn't know who the fuck was who with all the mafia people.

I've just spent the last half hour trying to beat the last level of Sonic Unleashed. It's a shit game, definitely the worst Sonic game I've ever played, but I can't just give it up now. The last level lasts forever and combines the loose hard to control daytime stages with the slow awkward nighttime stages. The result is fucking awful, like being smashed over the head with the various flaws in the game. It's a shame too because the actual level itself looks good, it's just a shame it stretches out so long. I never thought a game in the Sonic series, where speed is the key, could have a level that was so long and cruel.

I managed to waste about 8 lives on one stupid platforming section, meaning I had to repeat the whole section again, and I still haven't fucking beaten it. It's like a final kick in the balls from this horrific game.

I played Mario Galaxy 2 a little with a Wii set up at Gamestop, and honestly it seems like the exact same thing as Mario Galaxy plus Yoshi. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm definitely going to wait on a price drop before picking up Mario Galaxy 2 if I'm going to pick it up at all.

Yeah man that pretty much sums it up. But I still enjoyed it. Most stars are too easy and its kinda like ohh thats kinda cool how they did that but just as it got good the level ended.
There are some tricky stars to get ones that took me maybe ten to fifteen tries, but not enough.
The green stars are cool after getting 120 I've had a couple ones that the put just out of reach and you have to work the jumps perfect to get them.

But yeah its pretty much a major dejavu or whatever you call it.

Why is this one bounty job in Red Dead so fucking hard. You have to cross virtually the whole of this one section, get the guy and come back. Unfortunately the game decides to give the guy tons of henchmen with super powerful rifles, with even more guys literally appearing next to you when you put him onto your horse, at which point the game decides that I chose to select my shitty revolver even though I clearly selected the rifle. Also grizzly bears and wolves start attacking you and the lasso chooses not to wrap around the guy.

Dead Eye Dead Eye Dead Eye. Always carry some chewing tobacco, moonshine or whatever items refill it. It's sometimes the only way to complete bounty missions alive. The one that refills it and prevents it from depleting for 10 or so seconds is invaluable sometimes (I think it's moonshine) so a good tactic is to use dead eye when you see enemies in the distance approaching to pick people off and once you've run it down, allow them to get a bit closer before using the moonshine and then find the gun with the biggest clip and go nuts.

The problem I had though was that the enemies seemed to appear as I was putting the guy on my horse, and by the time I gained control, they were right on top of me.
It didn't help that I had the Cattleman Revolver equipped rather than any of my newer guns. Was a little bit of a dumb thing to do.

If possible, lasso them whilst on your horse and ride away from the carnage and tie them up in a safe place.

What Caael said. As for guys shooting you while putting the guy on your horse, do what I do. Kill everybody except the bounty target, then shoot the bounty target in the leg and immediately whistle for your horse. This way your horse should be pretty close to you once you've hogtied the bounty target. The henchies seem to have a countdown to appear a few seconds after the bounty target's dead or tied up, so if you do this the bounty target's backup won't appear until you're already on your horse and starting to ride out with your bounty target.
