Technically, the growing of the plants is legal, but actually picking the buds, isn't. Atleast here in Canada. That is because you could use it for hemp. BUT, if there is a huge field of plants, they will grab them up, because that is obviously used for selling. So ya, the growing isn't illegal, but picknig the buds is.

Security is much more tight than you think. You cant get away with anything anymore. It's not hard to find out where you are on a certain day. If it's a school day, they'll check to see if you turned up for the day. If it's a weekend, they'll ask your parents if you were in. Deduction is a powerful tool.
