Oh, I just basically said "hey neat, COD5 is coming to Wii" and my dad said "if it can be bought on the PS3 it should be bought on the PS3" and he justified it by saying the PS3 had a harddrive. Which I guess he sort of has a point there, but goddamit, it mostly boils down to personal preference.

Earlier today when I was playing Bully: Scholarship Edition he asked if it came out on the 360 and I said yes. He said that it probably performed better on that system due to the harddrive. What with Bully being open-world and all, the Wii does make a lot of noise loading everything off the disk.

But I'm really getting irritated with him thinking he knows all about video games when he really doesn't. His only exposure to modern gaming is from the PS3 for chrissake's.

Anyway, tl;dr?

The amount of RAM a system has dictates how much loading it does. Like Zephyr said, the hard drive is for saving things. You can record something like three matches, up to an hour or more each in Halo 3, but you can only record 3 minutes of a match in Brawl, and only one match at a time. Hard drives have their advantages.

Anyway, usually the first console you play is the one you end up sticking with for the most part. Though if you were brought up with more than one system, you'd probably like both.

Your dad probably likes the PS3 more than the other consoles because it has fancy graphics and more power than it knows what to do with (it can deflect bullets after all).

That's my judgement at least. And he's probably right. CoD5 would probably be better played on a PS3 than a Wii or 360, but if you do online multiplayer a lot, or you're fairly new to gaming/want to try something new, you should go with the 360 or Wii respectively.

I'd probably get CoD5 for the 360 if I had one.

I've got a used old model PS2, and it works fine. And if the problem of the RRD could be fixed, I'd get a 360. There are a few games for it coming out before X-mas that I want, but are exclusive to the 360.

The PS3 has overtaken the 360 everywhere except NA =). I expect the PS3 to overtake the 360 in your country by 2009.

The PS3 launched at a loss for Sony, so they were looking out for their customers ><. And Sony is a conglomerate. It made business sense to integrate their business divisions. Without the PS3 Sony would not have on the HD war for eg.
And PS2 was the weakest console yes, but remember it came out first. Oh and like the PS3, the PS2 pushed a format (DVD)

Kutaragi left Sony on a bad note yes, but come on, why only the bad stuff? He has done much more good for gaming than probably anyone in the industry ><. He designed the masterpeice PS brand, that WILL win this generation again.

Yes. GREAT customer service. Nintendo rarely needs to fix things on their consoles (the games on the other hand.....*coughbrawlonlinelagcough*), but when one breaks, it's promplty replaced without a fee (at least to my understanding). As for microsoft, well, at least they don't tell their customers to screw themselves. Other than that, I don't know much about microsoft's customer service.

And regardless of what all the fanboys say, the PS3 IS overpriced. Whether the hardware in it is actually worth four to five hundred bucks doesn't matter. A game console shouldn't be that expensive. It might as well be exclusive to the rich and famous. I'd like to actually be able to afford to buy some games for my console after I buy it.

I'll give that one to you, but if you want your console to have a bunch of crap in it like a movie player, have it your way. Frankly, I don't need Blu-Ray, I have a DVD player, so what if I can have a movie AND special features on the same disk?

I just want to play games, not spend 100 more dollars for a video game console that has extra crap in it.

Probably not cartridges, but gaming would have surely be been behind the entertainment industry in terms of storage format. Now gaming is actually at the forefront, dictating what the rest of the entertainment industry use because of Sony. As gamers you guys should be proud of this accomplishment. All because of Sony.
Gaming has allowed CDs, DVDs and now Blu-ray because of Sony (yes, I need you guys to read the because of Sony again >_<)

And the PSP was Sony's first portable. Of course they're going to make mistakes. Nintendo is basically king at portables, and Sony should be patted on the back for giving Nintendo some competition.

Sony only won the HD war because Blu-Ray stoes more data on a disc. Most of Hollywood suported it because of that. The PS3 barely had a part in it. Both the PS2 and Xbox played DVD's. Plus, DVD's didn't have much of a competition with VHS being outdated, and completely overshadowed with DVD's superiority.

Key word there Eugine. Fact is, if they HAD had it cooked up long before the Wii, then why'd it suck giant salty balls when it was released? From what I've read, the motion sensing was too crappy at E3 to have been concieved more than a week or two before the convention was opened to the public.

As for Nintendo being the frontrunner, I doubt we'd still be using cartridges Eugine. You know the origional PlayStation? Well what it was based on was made by Nintendo. Sony and nintendo were working on an optical disc periphrial for the SNES, and then dropped the project. Sony took it and made it into the playstation. So technically speaking, if Nintendo never made the SNES, we wouldn't have PS3's today.

Nintendo made the D-Pad, Sony copied it.
Nintendo made the analog stick, Sony copied it
Nintendo incorperated motion-sensing into a controller, Sony did soon after.
Nintendo started work on an optical disk periphrial, Sony took it and made it into the Playstation.
Nintnedo gave their controllers rumble, Sony did soon after with the dual-shock.

Nintendo is the oldest company in the gameing industry. They were the ones who pioneered it. They came up with literally ALL of the ideas that you see integrated into consoles, aside from Blu-Ray, HD DVD, and multiple core processors.

Sony did not come up with the idea of using optical disks, Nintendo did.

You say Sony did a whole bunch of great stuff for the industry. Name them.

WD, cartridges are far more expensive to make than optical disks. They also take longer to make. Nowadays, you could probably get an easy 60 gigs into a cart, possibly even 128, but with flash technology where it's at, Blu-Ray would be far more cost effective as far as data storage goes.

However, Flash memory would outperform the optical disks (faster read speeds), and are by far more durable.

In the near future, when Nano-RAM is perfected, I wouldn't be too surprised if cartridges were used again. Though I doubt that any of the big three would use them. I could imagine another company trying to get into the market with nano-ram carts and a system using them though.

I believe disks are a stupid thing to save data on. Cartridges/cards are much, much more durable than a lame disk. The only reason we use disks is because we're used to those huge records like DJs use...

The PS3 directly influenced blu-ray's victory. Most MMP companies movies were idential on blu-ray and HD-DVD interms of disk space used (well, when they were released on both formats of course).
The PS3 created a much higher install base, and that's exactly what the movie companies needed, an install base. Anwyay go research it, I'm too lazy to write out the rest.

And I said the PS3 and PS2 pushed the format. It just allowed the format to be cemented into people's home earlier than expected.

Doesn't matter. Blu-Ray holds more data, and Hollywood faps over that fact. The thought of being able to store a whole 3 hour long movie in high-def, WITH extra features, and all on the same disk, well, that's highly appealing to them. HD-DVD holds something like 30 or 40 GB of data. Blu-Ray can hold upwards of 60. As blue/violet laser technology advances, you can expect to see 120GB blu-ray discs.

Of course, blu-ray will become obsolete in about another two or three years when holo-discs come out. One terrabyte of data is a LOT more than blu-ray could ever hope for.

I'm very happy with my 5 disc Sony DVD player, and the DVD/CD drive I have in my computer is from Sony, and hasn't had a single hiccup over the past....4 years? Something like that.

But even though all companies have to care about profit to survive, Sony cares too much. Atari, Sega, Nintendo, all had their share of bad games, but their compitition and failures were healthy for the gaming industry. I have yet to see how any of the competition between the big 3 has been helpfull. The motion sensing in the Wii was designed to cath peoples' interest and sell more consoles than the other two, but it was also to be innovative. Besides that, motion sensing is the only thing really worth mentioning that's been incorporated into gaming in the past few years, and it hasn't been all that impressive. blu-ray has far more to do with movies, audio, and data storage than gaming. Dual layer DVD's will stay for a while in consoles (mostly due to sony's copyright on blu-ray which won't expire for a while), and when they leave, hollographic disks will take their place.

Actually, there is one thing useful that's been the result of competition this generation. Online gaming.

If you name specific games that you liked a lot, that doesn't really count. Those games were likely 3rd party, and even if they were 2nd party, who cares? Sony likely just bought the studio or something. It's more of a games that made the console in that case, instead of the console making itself great, or the game company making the games great like Nintendo does.

The DVD was actually made by a collaboration of different companies. Sony and Phillips, who were behind the MultiMedia Compact Disc (MMCD), were actually only responsible for makeing the DVD more resistent to damage.

Actually, to be honest, if UDO's weren't so darn expensive, they would've dominated the blu-ray disc. Far more durable, and a speculated 500GB possible storage capacity. Blu-ray is, so far, appearing to only be able to barely squeeze 250GB.

WB released movies on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Blu-ray standalone players were not performing well (and neither were HD-DVD standalone players), but the PS3 was performing well compared to those. When WD released titles, the blu-ray titles outsold the HD-DVD titles 2-1 because of the PS3 install base.

Well, they copied rumble in the PS2. Analog sticks in PS1, I don't know if you'd consider that copying or just the basics. Sixaxis uses tilt shortly after Nintendo releases motion controls. The PS button copies the 360's button. PSN vs. Xbox Live... Zeypher might have others.

If you compare that to things original Sony has done, well, there's not much at all.

I still stand by my point that it's all opinion. I dont think Sony are the best, I think Microsoft are. I'm quite happy if people dont agree with me, because they can go play their console, and i'll go play mine. I like the PS2. I want one. But Sony treats it's consumers like ****, and is no where near worth fapping over. The Wii is innovative, the 360 has great online gaming, so in those respects, there's at least a reason for them to have fanboys. The PS3 is an overpriced pile of advanced hardware that would be more useful as a george foreman grill than a console. It's only redeeming feature is the graphics and blu-ray player. Neither of which dictate whether a game is good or not. Sure, it's got processing power comming out of it's ears, but the first time that it'll ever really be put to use is with MGS4. And that's only because of the graphics.The PS2 was great. The PS3 sucks balls and will not win this round.

The only reason why the PS3 is selling is because MGS4 is comming out, Killzone 2 is in production, and there's an assload of FF fanboys waiting on FFXIII. Notice how all three of those are sequels in some respect, and not origional games. Not saying they;re bad, but they're not origional. Also, they're all supposed to have great graphics. Again, I don't care if they look good, because if the gameplay sucks, I'm turning it into toilet paper.

Like I said, we shall see who will be wrong, and who will be right. I predict the PS3 will win this generation, although not as comfortable as the PS2, but they will win. I predict by the end of this year, or atleast next year, Microsoft will be number 3 despite launching a year ahead.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 came in last, but I'm not sure where it'll land exactly. The PS3 will probably come in second, but not first. The PS2 was fairly cheap, not overpowered, and with the release of the Slim version, was also small and portable. On top of that, it had the most impressive library of games when compared to the other two. The PS3 may have all/most of the PS2 titles, but the PS2 is by FAR cheaper, and the PS3 doesn't have enough games worth mentioning right now to justify it's price.

The console's features don't decide the war. The games do.
