I don't think Sakurai would be foolish enough to detract from the multi-player - I think it's about time a fleshed out single-player mode was introduced, and this looks to be exactly that.

The area in the planet, you mean. It's all on zebes.
It said Ridley BOSS BATTLE, because it's the music you hear when you fight him in the games. It doesn't make a difference on whether he'll be playable or not. Besides, this is Sakurais's list:
King Dedede(5)
Diddy Kong(4)
Geno(4)
Ike(4)
Ridley(4)
Captain Olimar & Pikmin(3)
Krystal(3)
Takamaru(3)
Windwaker Link(3)
Animal Crossing MC(2)
Claus(2)
Demiru(2)
Isaac(2)
Jeff(2)
Kawasima(2)
King K.Rool(2)
Lip(2)
Lucas(2)
Mega Man(2)
Oguma(2)
Ouendan(2)
Sukapon(2)
Aside from the stupid ones, ( so basically from the AC MC and Below, excluding Isaac), they all have decent sized chances, because it's what the public wants.
Sakurai also stated he would like to have more villains in the game, as there was an obvious lack of them last time. Ridley is to Samus like Bowser is to Mario. Would you not include Bowser?
Also, Sakurai also wanted more flying people, so that he could make the aerial combat more prominent. Ridley fits this perfectly, as he is more based around flying than any of the current Smash characters.
Sakurai also would like lots more metroid characters, as in the past 2 games, there was only one, and now it has become one of the most popular franchises Nintendo have. It doesn't make sense to just have 1 and a half characters for it, it needs at the very least, 1 more character. Dark Samus wont do, we cant just have 3 Samuses.
Dont go giving the ' He's too big' arguement, because you will fail. Look at Bowser in Mario 64. He was huge compared to mario. Look at him in melee. He's only about a head bigger than Mario.
And the update isn't working for me, not loading at all. I checked all the different languages, and none are working.

And relating to an earlier post, no I don't care about the size thing. I'd be glad for him to just be in it. Bowser dwarfed Mario in Sunshine, and Ridley dwarfs Samus in Prime. They could easily shrink Ridley a bit. Almost to how big he was compared to Samus in the original Metroid. But you know, the real Ridley, not the original Metroid Ridley.

I like characters with speed, long range and close range attacks. Much more strategic value.

In SSB Kirby, Ness and Pikachu where all godly characters... Especially Ness.
Melee nerfed all 3 characters to hell, and thus made them a lot less populair nowadays. And to be honest here: Link, Samus and Luigi are still considered being the worst characters in SSB, and the slowest aswell.
But that's not saying anything, you should play the character you wanna play as, like I do play Donkey Kong in Melee knowing that he BY FAR isn't the best character nor even close to that. He does have nasty combos against fastfallers however.
And I said it before and I'm saying it again: Roy = crap. Crappy aerials, slower and laggier than Marth, much shorter reach than Marth and easy to combo. Falco and Marth are both Top Tier characters though, and should both be nerfed to hell in Brawl... BUWAHAHAH.
Now that Diddy's confirmed, I can't wait to play this game already. ;) Now only add K.Rool as an unlockable, and I'm truely happy.

But I very rarely use a different character. I just prefer the ones that bring out the best of my skill, despite the fact the I've seriously lost my edge. ;)

Certain items are indeed extremely cheap, but some add some extra depth. I for one carry skills for item and item-less battles. I say that items always makes Smash Bros. much more fun. Like say some one was about to throw a Bomb-omb at you, if you can time it right you can grab it after its thrown and throw it back. Those kind of moments make me laugh.

Other than that, Poke' Balls, Home Run Bat, Super Scope, and when I used Kirby, the warp star was another item I got good at using.
What I hate the most about Unlocking Roy, is that I became much better with him then I was with Kirby, but after a while I started sucking. At both of those characters. And I miss being good with Kirby, because he brought out the best of my fighting skills.
But Roy, well, he turned out to be really good with Bob-Ombs.
Still haven't figured out what I'm good with when using Fox.

The weekly poll was my idea! D:<
Oh really? My fault. :(
But man, if you think about it... the cast of Brawl is going to be huge! Go look at the character's page on the site. Right now, the Newcomers and Veterans that have been profiled number a solid 17; that's not counting characters we know are going to be in the roster, including Snake and Meta Knight as Newcomers, and Captain Falcon and Ness, who have both been in the game since the N64 original.
Count those in and that is 21 characters revealed on the site alone so far - not counting the fact that there are still three more months until the release (other newcomers and veteran characters are definitely going to be revealed in those many weeks still to come) and, most importantly, that Melee has only twenty-six characters (including Shiek and clone characters).
And speaking of clones, if we count that Melee had a lot of them (Mario/Dr. Mario, Link/Young Link, Captain Falcon/Ganondorf, Pikachu/Pichu, Fox/Falco) - guess how many unique characters there are? Only 21 - and Brawl has already matched that number in just a few months since the blog has been revealed.
Point being: the roster for Brawl is going to be comparatively much, much larger than originally expected, and that figure's only going to grow as the last months until release wind down.

I'm personally curious about what the "rewards" will be if you complete a mini-game, and what happens if you fail... maybe if you lose, you get damage accumulated (i.e. +40%), making it easier for the other players to knock you around... Hmm.
Even so, seriously innovative idea.
EDIT: New poll for this week.

All reports indicate that yes, it will. Brawl has been planned from the beginning to be a flagship title for Nintendo's free Wi-Fi Connection service, and though the feature hasn't yet been 100% confirmed, you can rest soundly in the knowledge that it's an almost surefire guarantee.

I assume the characters would simply be removed from all players' rosters.

It had better be. Really, think how much better mainly-multiplayer games would sell if they were online, not having to rely on a person to play with, I'd love it and I'm sure others would as well.

In Mario Strikers Charged Football playing online you can use any character and any stage, no matter what point you are up to in the game.

I'd suggest that you're able to use any character you've unlocked. Personally, I'm not willing to not use the sole character I'll end up using just so it won't spoil it for someone else. Heck, I'd rather it be that way so I'd be able to see what other characters are out there before I even unlock them.
Basically, you should be able to use any character available to you, but you should only be able to use the stages that are available to all the players.
This way, there'd be a possibility for future updates (like new maps or characeters) without interfereing with game compatibility between two people.

How awesome would it be if Rayquaza was a Pokeball release? He could use something like Outrage or Dragon Claw as his move.

Nah kidding there, the 2 are similair, but I think Ridley will have way more tail based moves than Charizard and not breathe flames but rather spew fire balls.

Ridley is too unique to have a clone. Who else has a tail stomp?

But I really hope that Brawl ends up using the Havok physics engine. It'll make the interactions between characters and objects more....realistic. Like you won't have one character's foot going all the way through another's stomach. Or one box falling through another and just pushing it aside. Boxes will land on top of eachother and stack, or fall off an edge if less than half of it's base is on the ground. That'd be pretty cool.

All the 360 and PS3 fanboys can argue all they want about the Wii having poor graphics, but if it can render visuals as stunning as those in MP:3 and SSBB, who cares if it isn't high def? You don't need high definition to have awesome visuals. And really, I can live without HD. I have a 1080p capable TV, and though I'd love to put it to good use, I've been able to live with standard def movies and visuals for quite some time. And I'll continue to. But I can't wait to play SSBB on widescreen. :D

That's meta Ridley, and neither is he ***/woman.
Ridley is too cool for you.
The opening videos open up loads of possibilities. I posted an idea for Ridley and Samus' opening video:
'Samus is walking through the Tallon overworld, scanning the area, and then Ridley jumps down onto her. Battle commences, Samus runs around him, while he's pelting her with fireballs. She charges a missile, for which he realises, and flies up into the air. Samus fires, and Ridley dodges, and lunges for her with his claws. Suddenly, something in Samus' helmet beeps, and she runs for her ship. Ridley doesn't know whats going on, so he trudges after her.
What the beeping was, was a new mission for her, on Earth where a big explosion had caused part of the earth to disintergrate away. She took off straight away, Ridley following her, in his custom ship built for him.'
Dude.

Dude, this is CG - admittedly good CG, but you can't use that to say the Wii can pour out graphics on par with PS3/360.
Though Brawl, Galaxy, and Corruption are definitely raising the standards for the Wii.

Well what I meant, was that you don't have to have an overpowered machine to get good graphics.
But, even then, take a look at Snake. He's a human, and he looks pretty realistic to me. On par with some 360 games I'd say. Or even diddy's fur. IMO, his fur doesn't look fake.

It's only the fan boys of the PS3 (a dieing breed) and the 360 saying these things. They can't accept that their console might be rivaled. They just hate Brawl cause it looks good, which doesn't even make sense.
But it's all fair game in Console War II.

His FS will rain mines down from the sky, and then after they land, they explode. For some reason, this makes him really old, turning him into the Solid Snake you saw in MG4.

Also, glad for the slight change in Mario's special moveset - F.L.U.D.D. (God that's annoying to type) is really unique (though no damage?) - nice that the Mario tornado was made a normal move.

Mario's new move will add some nice stategic play when using him. If he keeps his cape I'll be satisfied.

It's because he's going to be a hidden character. Brawl hits US shelves December 3rd and might come out in Japan before that. There's got to be at least a couple weeks (maybe more like a couple months) for manufacturing and printing discs, which means the game has to be totally done by then. And before that, the game has to finish undergoing localization, which is going to come after all the tweaking and balancing and bugtesting that would inevitably accompany adding a character or whatever. If you think they're still making character roster changes at this late in the game you're out of your mind.
On another note, I made this:

Obviously not finished, but i'm getting there.
