People should start off with metalcore I think, then move into melodic metal like In Flames, Children Of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, then get into other bands / sub-genres from there.

Yeah and it's people saying "the first x albums were all great but everything else that followed was crap". I hate it when people constantly compare new albums to old albums. They don't seem to understand the concept of musical progression. Bands change over time, if a band kept releasing the same sounding music album after album with no improvements / changes they would become very stale and lose their fanbase very quickly.

My favorite out of all three is As I Lay Dying.

As I Lay Dying are my favourite metalcore band, one of the only metalcore bands I really listen to anymore actually. You would do well to try and get a copy of / download their most recent album "Shadows Are Security", very good album.

Children of Bodom are the bomb, and that is a great song off the new album by the same name. 'Hatebreeder' is probably my favourite album by them, then 'Hate Crew Deathroll'.

Skyfire - Spectral (album)

I downloaded all 3 full-length albums by this band last night, and it's REALLY good. Fantastic melodic death metal, I'm especially loving this album, the most recent (2004).

And I finally got around to downloading some Dimmu Borgir. 'Mourning Palace' is a good song :P.

@ Wiflewood: That's probably the only real stand out track off "Soundtrack To Your Escape", get some tracks off Colony / Clayman if you can. 'Embody The Invisible', 'Behind Space '99', 'Scorn', 'Bullet Ride', 'Clayman' are all great tracks.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Miasma (album)

These guys are another of the few pure American metal bands I know. They have a brutal sound, great catchy solos, intense drumming, good lyrical themes, a good vocal range, and generally catchy songs. One thing that annoys me is how they present themselves. They just look like all the ****ty American metalcore bands going around, with poof haircuts, *** style etc. A band has to present themselves in a way that suits their music I feel, and these guys just don't do that. ****ing amazing album though, so brutal.

It's true what Split said. But regardless, GS does have a phenomonal soundtrack... I would love to hear an actual orchestrated version of say, Saturos (or Star Magician's) battle theme, or the Overworld theme you hear when you meet up with Isaac and the others. That one is simply brilliant.
