The album 'Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia' by Dimmu Borgir is a symphonic black metal masterpiece, get into it, you won't be dissapointed. 'Death Cult Armageddon' isn't bad either, but I compare everything they do to PEM.

Norma Jean are an atrocious excuse for grind (I see them as more metalcore). I heard 1 song off their most recent album, utter ****e. Poor production (I thought) and terrible vocals (they must have undergone some terrible mixing work). In all honesty Yuki, you're better off skipping the metalcore stage and going straight to death / black / power (more of a female -friendly genre anyway) metal. Though some need the bridge of metalcore to get them used to the extreme sound, others don't.

Severe Torture - Misanthropic Carnage (album)

Not as good as their most recent album (Fall of the Despised) though still not bad at all.

Well that is something I take into consideration, but the music they play is absolutely atroctious as well. I mean first of all the drummer cannot sing; Whine and vibrato are 2 things that should never be mixed. Secondly, the scream, while powerful and unique in its own way, does not measure up to the screams found in black metal. The drumming is boring, basic, and unoriginal, the guitar tone is awful, and he can't play well either; no solos and no real technicallity in riffs. All that band has going for them is that they are somewhat catchy and can appeal to the hordes of teens who rely on MTV for their spoon feeding of musical intake.

Severed Savior - Brutality is Law

Fairly average brutal death metal, but they have a decent sound and some nice little solos, making it a worthy listen now and then.

Metal-wise? Well as far as black metal is concerned Dimmu Borgir is the most commercial band out there, and seem to be gathering quite a few female fans recently due to the success of Death Cult Armageddon.

For death metal is may just be beneficial to listen to some metalcore acts first to get used to the vocals. Such bands as All That Remains, Unearth and As I Lay Dying would be good choices, then move onto soem heavy thrash (Pantera and Lamb of God), then to melodic death metal (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and Children of Bodom). After that I was used to the vocals / harsh guitar and so should you.

For real death metal, Cannibal Corpse, Decapitated and Necrophagist would be a healthy mix of brutal and technical.

It all takes time. I didn't go from listening to Punk / Emo to death / black metal overnight, it took a while of listening to both and realising which I prefered and which was better (metal won both).

Story of the Year are not metal, they never were, they never will be.

DragonForce are quickly becoming that way by joining Roadrunner and subsequently attracting a legion of ****** fans. Though 'Inhuman Rampage' IS a power metal masterpiece. Probably the metal 'line' would be drawn at thrash metal (Testament, Metallica, Megadeth etc.) or bands such as Lamb of God or In Flames (pop metal). Everything else (emo, hardcore, metalcore, punk) is just mallcore ******ry, and gives the real metal (black, death, power, progressive etc.) a tainted reputation, which I absolutely abhor.

Twin Obscenity - Bloodstone (album)

Everyone needs a band that only about 5 people in their country have heard of. This band is awesome, I was into 'For Blood, Honor and Soil' for ages, but I just recently (tonight) got their third album (2001), and it's not bad. I don't know what happened to them, as I can't find much information besides lyrics and an interview or 2 on the internet, I can only hope sometime in the near future they will come back with a fourth album.

Rating: 8/10 (at this stage, need to give it a proper listen a few times though)

DragonForce would be a hybrid of speed, melodic, and power metal, though they do bust out the occasional ballad ('Trail of Broken Hearts').

I don't listen to Story of the Year, but the name, their image, their fans and the bands they play with just scream emo / screamo / pop punk, and I think I saw one of their videos on an all emo / screamo episode of Rage one night (I was drunk, tired and bored at the time though...).

Yellowcard fits string instruments into their songs nicely which you rarely hear in mainstream music today. In some ways it's refreshing, but it loses its charm somewhat when they use it in every song.

Speaking of Yellowcard, this song was off the Spiderman 2 soundtrack.

The Ataris - The Night the Lights Went Out in NYC

This CD was much more centered on the whole Mary-Jane/Peter Parker thing than the actual action, so this is another slow rock song. Very good, but not too memorable when you have other bands like Yellowcard, Jet, Dashboard Confessional, and Train on the same CD.

I've been listening to lots of In Flames stuff as usual. Right now Trigger, Metaphor, and Eye of the Beholder recently. In Flames roolz. I've also been listening to Dream Theater recently. Strange Deja Vu off the album Scenes From A Memory is a great song.

Yes, the new In Flames doesn't strike me quite as much as the older stuff. My favorite album is the Subterranean. It's amazing--buy it if you haven't. I just don't like how In Flames are so damn commercial these days. The same goes for Bodom and to a lesser extent Norther. I just love the old stuff because no emo kid really appreciates it, and it's much less heard of. So many wankers just treat Reroute as their first album. Colony / Clayman are my favourites, that was their peak IMO.
